Thought I would try out 2.53.9.1 to see if 'Not responding" messages were fixed from 2.53.9 version. (See my "Not Responding" emails on SeaMonkey Support)

Yes they are!! Progress on this front at least...

But this particular release runs like an absolute dog - with delays between keystroke and response which are too great for me on standard PC hardware (see above), so I am going back to 2.53.6 for now, which has performance comparable to Firefox, but for email also and doesn't have the "Not Responding" messages either.

Need to do substantial performance upgrade to 2.53.9.1 version to get me to upgrade again. Thanks anyway guys...

Premature decision unless you have done some diagnostics you have not reported here. Not seeing numerous reports of performance issues on these forums.
Have you tried launching the program in Mozilla Trouble Shooting Mode to see if an installed extension is at fault? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/di ... shoot-mode
Have you confirmed that any security software running on that computer is not causing performance issues with the new version?

Javascript Debugger (Venkman) is an extension NOT valid for SeaMonkey 2.53.9.1, and totally obsolete. Image

SeaMonkey 2.29 dropped support for the legacy JavaScript Debugger interface (JSD1). Hence add-ons that relied on it, like the JavaScript Debugger (Venkman) that came bundled with SeaMonkey, or Firebug 1.x, have stopped working. While Venkman has been discontinued ....
