Deleting Messages

I just installed Thunderbird on a WinXP system and think it looks pretty good so far. I am connecting to 2 different IMAP accounts for mail. I have it configured to just mark the messages as deleted instead of moving them to the trash. When I hit the delete button when a message is open, the message just sits there. I have to close the message window and get back to the message index. The message is marked as deleted though. Is there a way for me to have the message window close and return to the index when I hit the delete button? Or is this a bug?
