Show email and NOT name in "from" colmn of msg list! Securit

Ok, this is not an 100% safe method but it is a strong security indicator for me and other users:

I would need very much an option to show the senders email address and NOT (or in addition to) his name in the "from" column of the message list.

Currently there is always the name shown e.g. "HSBC bank plc"

If I would have an option to show the email address I could easily see that the original sender is NOT the bank but "tricky.hacker@nigerianmess.com".
So I could kill this msg without having to inspect the content.

Spam filters do not always sort out these kind of mails.

Could the authors include this in the next TB release?
It should be not difficult to implement.

Under menu path Tools->Options->Advanced->Reading & Display tab->unselect "Show only display name for people in my address book".

Dan, I think that only works in the header bar instead of showing 'You'. If the sender has specified a name to display when sending a message, then that name as well as the address will display. I don't think that the name itself can be turned off in the thread pane column or in the actual header(Ctrl+U).

I believe that it works for incoming addresses as well as your own ("You") entry. Let's see if it works for pstover.

It's not even 1% safe, there is nothing to stop a Nigerian hacker from sending an email from anyone@hsbc.com, or any other address for that matter, don't trust the "from:" address AT ALL!

Why do users need an extra extension for it?

I just want to ask again if this feature (two columns) can be added into the core Thunderbird.

I prefer to as less addons as possible.

1. You've replied to a thread that's been dead for almost three years (since your last post) and for five years since since the thread was actually active.

2. We're not Mozilla so we have no control over what functionality is or is not added to Thunderbird.

3. Since there were only two users posting here to ask for the "feature", it would be very unlikely that Mozilla would choose to add this to the core code. Potentially a lot of work for very little benefit (for most users.) That means that an extension is the correct way to deal with this, your preference to avoid extensions not withstanding.
