In the search dialog, there are several options to choose from to search for. However, none of them state what folders to look through; we must only search through a single folder hierarchy.

My structure of archiving email is by year and then month. However, within each month is the same titled folders (among others). There is no way (that I know of) to search, for example, in Folder 2009, search critera: "sub-folder named "Work", 'To' contains "dag", date is before xxxxxx", etc.

If you know elements of the content of the message you are looking for you can use the Global search rather than menu path Edit->Find->Search Messages. Try pressing Ctlr+K to initiate your search.
