It seems that when i add new mail account, switch from IMAP to POP3, by default it is set to download mail message and keep it also on the server.
I think that by default it should be to load message and keep server clean.

I suspect it is to satisfy those that still want POP and want to use a phone too.
Back in the days of POP only, I used to configure my email accounts with "Keep on server for 15 days", so I could use Thunderbird on more than one computer.
(BTW, I now use IMAP, so the issue is irrelevant for me.)
