Hi,

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is that I'm seeing, so please be patient with me while I try to explain.

I often send email to an email list (mailman). I have tb configured to always place a copy of my outgoing email messages in inbox.

Normally, I will opt to send it as 'text/plain', but sometimes I have some text I want to be viewed as fixed-width (usually source code), so I try to send it as both 'text/html' and 'text/plain'. When I do this, some recipients complain that my message is poorly formated, specifically the quoting of the message I replied to is missing.

So, to analyse the problem, I try to look at both the message I had placed directly in my inbox, and the one I received from the list.

I set tb to 'view message body as plain text' and this is what I find :

1) my local copy looks poor - no quoting at all. Looking at the source confirms it is poorly formatted.

2) looking at the copy from the list, it looks 'fine'. Looking at the source, everything is quoted correctly. There are a few '=20's in there, so I'm not sure what those are, but it looks ok. I see a header, "x-content-filtered-by: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.9".

So, my current thinking is that :

1) tb is not formatting the text/plain part of my replies properly
2) some mailman filter is taking the text/html part of my replies and converting it to plain text and doing a good job of it.
3) the people who complain are actually complaining about the copy they receive directly (since I do a 'reply-all'), which hasn't had the list's filter applied to it.

Does this make any sense and is this a known issue?

Max.

PS. Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 (20090817) on Ubuntu 9.04 with latest updates applied.
