Gmail account configuration popup not working in ver 38.5.1

When I configure a Gmail account on Thunderbird version 38.5, it automatically detects the ports etc and opens a popup web page for entering Gmail login and password and authentication through that webpage. After successful authentication, the web page disappears and the thunderbird software window completes the account configuration. However, this popup window for Gmail account authentication does not appear in Thunderbird 38.5.1 and I get the error message that either username or password is wrong, as a result of which I am not able to login to the Gmail account from Thunderbird.
I am getting this error even after clean install of Thunderbird from the website https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ done after formatting of Windows to take care of any possible OS issues. The error continues.
