Do not leave message on server not working

I am new to Thunderbird, so maybe it is me, but I have not checked the "Leave message on server" box, but the messages are being left on the server anyway. I am running Windows 7 Pro and a POP3 Gmail account. I would like to have my messages removed from the Gmail server when I download them into Thunderbird, but thus far have not figure out a way to do that. Thanks.

Gmail's implementation of POP does not comply with all of the standards for a POP account and you've run into one of the anomalies in their design. To deal with that you'll have to change a setting on Gmail's settings page. Click on the Gear icon, select "Settings" from the menu that is displayed. Click on "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" then in item 2. of the the "POP download" section choose the action you wish taken after messages are downloaded from the server to Thunderbird. Click "Save Changes" at the bottom of that settings panel. Try deleting a message in Thunderbird then check its status on the Gmail web mail page.
