This problem has started to appear occasionally in recent weeks, namely, that the title of some messages in the inbox is different from the contents. It may be the correct title for the next message in the inbox, or it may display an empty file. At the same time, some messages display as HTML, even though they previously displayed normally. Both these problems make deleting a message dangerous, since I'm not sure I've deleted the one I want. So far I have recovered by going to my internet server and re-sending the suspect messages to myself. But I am concerned that whatever the problem is may start to affect a significant part of the inbox.
Ideas?

Moving to Thunderbird Support.
First backup your profile -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
Close Thunderbird and navigate to your Profile Folder ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder ). Find the files with the extension msf, such as Inbox.msf. Note that there will be sets of two files with the name but only one of these will have the MSF extension. Delete the files with the MSF extension. Restart Thunderbird, compact all folders, and see if things are back to normal. Note that the MSF files do NOT contain your messages. They are, for lack of a better term, an index file and will be recreated by Thunderbird as required.
