I have Firebird installed on a modern laptop using xpp. This machine is old but will run win98/ie6. However although firebird installs it will doit run. are there any specific system requirements.

What milestone (0.6, 0.6.1, etc.) are you using, or what nightly build are you using?

Firebird has no real system requirements, besides Operation System and hard drive space. The recommended requirements for the Windows version of Mozilla 1.4 (not Firebird)
* Windows 95, 98, or 98SE, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
* Intel pentium class processor (233 MHz or faster recommended)
* 64 MB RAM
* 26 MB of free hard disk space
People have been known to run Firebird on slower machines with less RAM, but as expected it is really slow.
EDIT: Clarified

Firebird 0.6.1 Running great on this machine WinXPP 2GHz 256MBDDR ADSL576K connection. Old machine is K62 266MHz Win 98sr2 96Mb 128K ISDN connection. That still does not run.

Same problem here. Can download and unzip, but won't run. Hmmmm. Must be missing something pretty simple, no? Clicking on MozillaFirebird.exe takes me to directly to http://www.mozilla.org/start/ but there's no Phoenix directory anywhere on the system, and no Profile or any files with .slt extension as suggested in the Step-by-Step post.

I'm on a pentium I 32 ram win95. Firebird works fine. I just have problems with too many tabs open at once, this slows me down. It's still faster than IE... (and there are no tabs on IE :) )

And so much more arrangeable to my tastes...

If you're on win9x/me systems, the profile folder is located at
C:\Windows\Phoenix
or
C:\Windows\Application Data\Phoenix (this may depend on the language of your OS)

BTW Ran FB on k6-200 with 32MB and the only problem is the huge mem-swapping with more than 2 tabs open...
