Eudora 8.0 Beta 9 can't send

Post by rcoole »

I just installed Eudora 8 on a new W8.1 system. I can receive email but can't send. I get an error message that says 'unable to establish a secure link with SMTP server using STARTTLS since it doesn't advertise that feature'. I called my ISP and they don't use STARTTLS.

The problem is the Eudora outgoing server setting has no option for turning off STARTTLS. Secure Authentication says 'No', but Connection Security still says STARTTLS. Is there a way to get around this?

TIA

Eudora 8 is based on modifications to Thunderbird 3.0.4. You should be able to select SSL/TLS instead of STARTTLS for the connection security. I'd expect the authentication method to be 'normal password' since most ISPs seem to rely upon connection security to avoid sending a password as clear text, rather than sending a encrypted password.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Secure_connec ... hunderbird (out of date, and written for 2.x) mentions: "In reality you have a Never, SSL and two mislabeled STARTTLS options. Thunderbird 3.0 beta has changed the user interface to solve this problem, offering SSL/TLS (formerly SSL) and STARTTLS (formerly TLS) now, with "TLS, if available" no longer being offered."

You are trying to use a abandoned, buggy, unsuccessful product. As a minimum I suggest you use the final released version (rather than beta 9) available at http://eudora-ose.en.uptodown.com/
