firefox 40 two icon on my windows 10 taskbar

I can reproduce this two icons problem on Windows10 if I
1. delete C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Mozilla Firefox, and make sure that there is no longer "Mozilla Firefox" in Start menu
or
2. install Firefox without creating icons for Firefox (custom installation)

And I could not resolve this issue unless creating icons for Firefox (run Firefox Setup.40.0.2.exe), making icon(shortcut) manually solved nothing.

Further to the above post I can confirm that the problem does NOT occur if you install Firefox and select the option to create a desktop icon.

If you select to create a start menu icon but not a desktop icon then the issue still occurs.

Once you have created the desktop icon, right click and select pin to taskbar - you will not then get the extra icon appearing when you start the program.

After creating the taskbar icon you can delete the desktop icon with no ill effect.

In addition I can confirm that this happens with Firefox, Firefox developers edition and Thunderbird!

From version 40.0.3 this problem appears to be solved, yay!

Yep... that pretty much the way that I stated above... but you did a better job of isolating the steps that caused this problem... seems that it is fixed in 40.03 ... who would'a thought.

Sorry, also 40.0.3 makes the same issue on windows 10.
I just quick resolved it, to install firefox again over the current same version. This solved the problem.

I have the latest version of Firefox and Thunderbird. I have just updated to Windows 10 and now have duplicate icons for both Firefox and Thunderbird.

I am loath to re-install either program as I have a number of add-ons and it would be easier to put up with the duplicates till this problem is fixed.

Windows should have a menu editor somewhere unless you think you have two running versions of the programs?
I might try and see if there's any "properties" information for each icon.
If the location of the icons are different (the links) you need to determine which will go to the proper trigger.

You have 2 duplicate "Shortcuts" for both on desktop?
Try deleting them & creating new ones from their respective Program files.

&.....Un/re-installing the program will not affect your bookmarks, Passwords, extensions etc., etc.
They are all in your Profile folder.

Thanks for the info re extensions not being affected.

I went ahead and installed new downloads of both Firefox and Thunderbird. Both programs are now working correctly, with only one icon each showing on the task bar.

Easier just to delete the old shortcuts & create new ones.

Anyway, as long as they're working for you.
