[fixed]Adobe Flash Player direct download site not current.
With every Flash update, I hate Abode more and more. In order to bypass Adobe DLM, I've been going to the Adobe Troubleshooting page to directly download the latest flash player via this address:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashpl ... yer_ax.exe
This works great when Adobe actually HAS the current release up. What I'm getting from there is Shockwave Flash 10.0.42.34 instead of the current release which is 10.0.45.2. Anybody know of an actively updated link so I can watch the Daily Show without crashing out the entire browser?

Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

Never mind... I just discovered the problem... the "install_flash_player_ax.exe" link is apparently for an older version, maintained for Troubleshooting purposes.
The shorter link works just fine:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashpl ... player.exe

The two different versions are for the ActiveX and NPAPI plugin architectures. Essentially, install_flash_player_ax.exe is for Internet Explorer and install_flash_player.exe is for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, etc. You should download and install both versions to ensure your browsers are safe.

IE is idle on my machines. It's a vestigial tentacle from an old epoch that doesn't want to go away.

Even if you don't use IE, parts of it are used by the operating system and other programs. You need to update both versions of the plugin to be safe. Alternatively, you could uninstall the IE version of the Flash plugin.

I've never installed it, I don't even think I have ActiveX.

All Windows computers have Internet Explorer and ActiveX. Most Windows computers ship with the Flash plugin also. IE8 comes with the Flash plugin preinstalled. Everyone that runs Windows should follow the instructions for securing Internet Explorer.

If you have downloaded and run the flash_player_ax version (http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashpl ... yer_ax.exe) then you now have the ActiveX version of the Flash plugin for IE.

F^ck the Adobe download manager. I refuse to install that sh!t.
The new Flash Player page does not give an option for direct download anymore.

Re: [fixed]Adobe Flash Player direct download site not curre
I have two XP systems and one Vista and the latest Adobe Flash update fails to install on all of them. Thank you for this link, at last I can update and use Flash again. I don't know what they are doing at Adobe regarding automatic updates, especially on Firefox but if everyone else has the same kind of problems I have on these 3 disparate systems, then I don't know how they can continue with distributing this rubbish.
Several months ago, the automatic flash update on FF would hang with the progress bar about 1/4 the way across and the plug-in would never update. Luckily I found this post back then and fixed the problem back then by downloading the EXE files.
With the most recent updater (today, Oct 3, 2010), the installation goes through multiple tasks with lots of questions and the mystery almost hidden check-box that needs to be selected, then somehow it appears to start a double session of installing itself, then finally after 2-3 tries the installation completes. However after closing all sessions of the browser and returning to the site demanding that flash be updated, it starts the procedure all over again. A reboot doesn't help. Using these stand-alone install EXEs is the only thing that will help.
Thanks for posting them but no-thanks to Adobe for the unnecessary overhead to do the install on Firefox and for Firefox then not accepting the install.

Re: [fixed]Adobe Flash Player direct download site not curre
I highly recommend saving the direct download link as a bookmark somewhere. That way when you get the notice that flash needs and update you can just go get ASAP.
