Will do you intend to purchase a 64bit processor?

Post by Jeff_pony »

In about a year or so 64bit processors should start to become affordable, do you think that this leap in bitage is worth upgrading for?

No. What are the advantages of a 64-bit processor anyway? File size can exceed 2 GB, and you can access a larger virtual memory space, but I don't think my computing needs are high enough to justify the purchase of a 64-bit processor unless it's time for me to buy a new CPU for other reasons.

When Intel makes one I will upgrade. I know I don’t need one, but I will definately get one just for fun.

Itanium is an Intel CPU, isn't it?

I should have clarified that I meant for desktop use.

I used to have a quad-Alpha workstation (166MHz x 4) running Digital UNIX at work. I should find the box, bring it home and try running Linux on it. :)

Probably, when I'm out of college (Eight years, if all goes well). It might be a 128 bit by then, though.

Eventually I'll get an x86-64 chip, but certainly not soon.

I expect that the small benefits you have from this in the early years (while OS architecture does not radically change) will not justify the higher price for not only the chip but also a much more complex chipset, motherboard, memory etc. So for desktop PCs I do not expect this to become common very soon.

Unless of course Intel decides to make the change and produces these things at similar price ranges as the 32 bit architecture.

Anybody notice that the post title makes no sense?

"Will do you intend to purchase a 64bit processor?"

Who cares - contrary to compilers we know how to find out the meaning of the words, even if they do not parse against the English language grammer. Do you need a grammatically correct reformulation?
