File manger or explorer

Post by cowboy »

This may not be the best place for this topic, but thought I would ask.

I'm looking for a file manager or explorer. (freeware or addon)
In other words something to use instead of the windows explorer, something to use to view, manage, navigate thru files/folders.

Thanks

p.s. I thought Fillezilla might have been that, but it's primarilly for ftp'ing

Moving to Tech...

If you're looking for another, more featured "explorer", then this may suit...

(Always choose the "Custom" Install.)

I have tried a few out. From my own preferences, the two best (depending on your budget) are

FREE Explorer++

PRO (cheap--$30 for a license) Xplorer2. Now Xplorer2 does have a freeware version, but its not as good as Explorer++, so until I feel like ponying up the cash, I'll just use the free one.

There are a few others that are a lot more expensive, but I never felt like paying any more for an explorer substitute.

Both of those programs have an optional replace Windows, err, option. In other words, you can use either program in two ways: (1) to replace Windows, so that any time you click on any folder, Xplorer2 opens it up; or (2) keep a shortcut on your taskbar/desktop, and when you want to view Explorer2, you click on its shortcut. With option (2), if you go into my computer and start clicking around, all the folders that open up will open up with Widows' own Explorer. Because I use Windows Search with teh preview pane with Windows Explorer, I use option (2).

Also, both programs have decent help forums as well, although Xplorer2 seems to have a more active support community in its forums.

I also once tried Directory Opus and quite liked it. (I think it was a 90-day trial a few years ago, actually; now it says 60.) However, I didn't feel like paying €70 for it.

In 1989 :er: a classmate showed me a "new" utility for its 286 MS-DOS-based PC: Norton Commander for DOS. I think it was version 3.0.
Since then, I've been unable to detoxify myself from orthodox file managers.
Right now I'm using Total Commander (shareware).

I've never been able to manage Windows Explorer property. [-(

Yes. Norton had a great MS-DOS replacement file manager there. Lots of capabilities that Windows Explorer never gained. I think there was a Norton replacement for Windows 98, but, if so, those tools were not updated for XP...

Sadly I didn't search very hard for another replacement. My main complaint was the lack of printable directory, and I found the way to get that - a little batch file which I install on all my computers. [I know there are programs, but why add more than a simple batch file that is linked on your context menu... ]

Total Commander is quite good.

Say what you want about Windows Explorer, but it's better than Nautilus. Alas.

I use Altap (Servant) Salamander, $$.

They do have an old free version, ftp://ftp.altap.cz/pub/altap/salamand/salam152.zip.
Certainly less feature filled, but it's is small, quick & excellent.

Otherwise & in no particular order:

Fadmin Free

nexus file

NGM

Nomad.NET

Turbo Navigator

Unreal Commander

wxCommander

easycmd

MyCO

Ignore below, it's only a test on my part.
