ScanDisk keeps running.

Post by nosebleed »

I don't know what happened but whenever I boot up Windows I see a message that says something like this.

"Some areas on your hard disk may have bad sectors on it.
Press any key to run ScanDisk"

(Usually it just runs scandisk). This keeps happening even if I restart the computer normally (without crashing), but it still runs ScanDisk as if my PC crashed.

I also have X-Setup installed on my computer, and there is an option for running ScanDisk on startup of a crash, the options are:

  • Do not run ScanDisk
  • Run ScanDisk after displaying a warning
  • Run ScanDisk without warning

My OS is Win98.

Seems like you have permanent hard drive problems or Scandisk is screwing up somehow. Well, since I wouldn't recommend removing Scandisk, you're left with reformatting your hard drive or ignoring it.

Odd. It's not doing it any more.

Alos, I forgot to mention that the X-Setup plugin keeps reverting to option 2, but that doesn't matter now.

I just had to bin a close friend's hard disk for that exact reason - It found quite a bunch of bad sectors on the disk. In fact, it couldn't even complete a surface scan on it! When scandisk gives an error about accessing cluster 2, you're screwed.

You have let it do a full surface scan, haven't you?
