I am now seriously thinking of buying a 15-inch PowerBook. If I buy it, it's going to be my first ever Mac.

I would take the 15-inch SuperDrive model, get one 512MB chip, downgrade from 80 GB to 60GB HDD, and downgrade from DVD-R/CD-RW to DVD-ROM/CD-RW. This would lower the price to just a bit over $2,500.

What do you all think?

All the new Mac's r0ck--PowerBooks and DeskTops are amazing computers, Im aching for PowerMac G5/Panther OS to be honest!

I got my start on Apples in 1982, moved over to a Mac in 1987. We had both kinds of beast from 1993 until about 2001, when we quit using our last Mac (it was an iMac, and too underpowered to go OS-X).

If I were running a small business with a small network, I'd run Macs. Everything works, no maintenance needed, easy for office help to learn to function. But a solo notebook computer?

That Powerbook you're looking at is 5.6 lbs. Our new Dell Inspiron 5100 is 7.2 lbs, and it is heavy. It's only 28% heavier than the Powerbook. My point: it's not a lightweight; it's more a desktop replacement. As a desktop replacement, our Dell cost, with extra battery, right at half of what that Powerbook will be.

Now, for lightweight machines, Dell and Sony equipment run $2000-2500 or so.

I love Macs, but I have more time than money, so I stick with PC architecture. If I had more money than time, I'd buy Macs. If you need your machine to work without fuss--mission-critical, etc--get a Mac. If you have time to fuss around, then you could save some bucks.

There it is: back in your lap(top).

I am just a programmer, and paying $2,500 for a computer is a big decision to make. That's why I want to hear people's opinions on this PowerBook.

Dai
You made a great choice IMHO.
Just dooooo it!

Jerry Pournelle says he is going to get one. One of his correspondents cites this.

Edit: Corrected link.

As it happens, my aging 233Mhz G3 (Revision A) iMac with 192MB physical RAM
actually runs Mac OS X (currently upto version 10.2.6) quite well . . . seriously!

I went to the local Apple Store to take a look at the new PowerBooks. They were all very nice. For some reason, however, they didn't appeal to me very much... After playing with it for about half an hour, I decided to put off my purchase. I am still interested in buying one, but not as urgently as I felt this morning.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Same thing happened to me, but I had to go 4 hours to the Apple Store (at least it was kinda on the way to where we were going) in Lenox Square, Atlanta, GA. We had to pass through Atlanta anyway.

I saw the computers and I really wanted one, but my dad talked me into a PC. I still want a Mac, though.

I may buy a cheap laptop PC and put a Linux distro on it. The problem is, a lot of laptops aren't "fully compatible" with Linux. :(
