no sound

I found a bunch of popups that have infected my computer. Ran my virus scan which found nothing. Now I have no sound on my computer. When I logged on to this site, a bunch of popups popped up claiming to fix everything thats wrong with my computer. I did delete a bunch of unrecognized programs using the control panel "remove programs" utility. Didn't do much good as the popups have totally infected my computer. Having no sound is driving me nuts. I probably deleted a sound card during my cleaning out unwanted programs. Where should I start looking?

^^Have you checked the Windows 7 mixer, click on the Taskbar Speaker then Mixer and see if System Sounds and other 'sliders' are up.

Especially make sure nothing is "muted". The mixer IMO is somewhat buggy. Unplugging and replugging in speakers/headphones sometimes helps it to detect them.
