GWX Control Panel

This is a free tool that can remove and disable the 'Get Windows 10' notification area icon on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Recent versions can also disable 'Upgrade to Windows 10' behavior in the Windows Update control panel and do much more.

Another trick:

Open Windows Update.
Click change Update Settings and choose 'Check for updates but let me choose...'
Click Installed Updates, at bottom.
Find update KB3035583.
Right-click, choose Uninstall.
Reboot when told to.
KB3035583 will now appear as a recommended update.
Right-click it and choose Hide Update.
MS may throw that 'update' at you again, disallow its installation and hide it too.
I have two hidden KB3035583 updates.

I went to control panel to delete the nag icon another day and it is not back...yet
Thanks for all the advice and help the win 10 remover has been stored just in case win 10 infects my "new"T420

When win 10 goes pay, soon, will that be the end of attempts to download win 10 aggressively? Once win 7 goes the way of XP and win 10 is even more in control then will it be Linux only??

You might want to consider it but only if your application needs can be covered by available Linux packages.

Not a good idea.
You have to install it or use the stand alone version to protect against the WIN10 updates.
You should end up with a small square icon with a white 10 in it, on your Task Bar.

Might be a change in your game plan?
There was an article in the Register this morning of Windows Ten security updates having other updates and advertising encouraging the use of Ten.

Am keeping an eye on the updates and always check to see if there's something in there to update to Windows 10.
IMHO they're being rather sneaky about it. This I don't like.
