Re: An MS/Windows fix for WIN 7 slow updates.
Thanks for that post... I installed it on 6/22 after reading stuff on the Net... but I have not Checked for updates yet ...I didn't want to babysit Windows for 8-10 hours... did it work for you? ... if so, isn't it interesting that M.S. had to create that 'fix' in the first place... almost seems that as people get pissed off more and more about the long time... maybe M.S. figured... hmmm... if they feel like giving up on win7... they will just update to 10... conspiracies all over the place?
BTW ... I hardly visit this section but I'm about to post a problem in here about my Firefox pinned icons and what the hell is going on... I'm sure it's a Windows thing...

Hmm.. well I have that sucker hidden, it's their fab new 'Update Rollup', 6 updates in one.
Five we probably don't need.
That has to be the 100th Windows speed Updates Update.
All clear as mud here..

Re: An MS/Windows fix for WIN 7 slow updates.
The issue in the past was that I could run the checker and it would run for 8-10 hours and finally report that there no updates found...seems fixed now.

Re: An MS/Windows fix for WIN 7 slow updates.
Nope df.
I haven't run any checks as yet.
Will wait for the usual monthly & see how it performs.
MightyG,
I read the MS article but couldn't really fathom it all.
The thing is....I was in the process of watching Steve Gibson's latest "vlog" (# 566), & he reckons that it was O.K.
on his WIN 7 PC, so, I thought that it would be fine to install the darn thing.
Hopefully MS will not "do a Reg edit" & kill what Never 10 has "fixed."

Re: An MS/Windows fix for WIN 7 slow updates.
Have KB3161608 hidden too.
Watch out for this update KB3173040 throws full-screen Win10 upgrade warning
Also you can use regedit and modify the following registry key without having to download software:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\
Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
You’ll probably have to create the WindowsUpdate key on the left-hand side, which you can do by right-clicking the Windows node.
Click on that new key, and then create a new 32-bit DWORD called DisableOSUpgrade on the right-hand side, and give it a value of 1.
This will also disable the OS Upgrade to Windows 10.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they did!LIMPET235 wrote:Hopefully MS will not "do a Reg edit" & kill what Never 10 has "fixed."
Can't help but be suspicious of those updates for Windows 7.
I check each and every one before I allow any of them to be installed.

And wouldn't ya know, it just showed up here !
Wonder if it's sneakily bundled with the Current/Next 'Rollup Update', if they're so determined to hook us up to the collective, how could they resist ?

They're probably saying to themselves "resistance is futile! to Windows 10 update!"

Re: An MS/Windows fix for WIN 7 slow updates.
I read the linked article, ta muchly LK, & was very surprised/shocked/dismayed at the UI not having any way to kill it.
eg; No red X at the top RHS.
Not sure about any buttons saying "No Thanks."
From the article...

MightyG, I take it that there is a way to close the message?Windows 7 and 8.1 customers are offered four choices:
Upgrade now
Remind me later
Notify me three more times
Do not notify me again
Notably, there is no "X" in the upper right corner.
There's also no indication if any other combination of keys, clicks or swipes might simply tell the full-screen ad to buzz off.

Dunno L, immediately hid KB3173040 along with the other 7 or 8 Win 10 related ones.LIMPET235 wrote:I take it that there is a way to close the message?

Update: Hey hey L,LIMPET235 wrote:This 17+ Meg file will fix the issue that has plagued WIN 7 users for a while.
Soooo..It works.
Tis Patch Tuesday: had a few weeks to check if KB3161608 was a Krusty Funbox and just installed it; 'standalone' msu download from the MS Site.
Restarted , clicked Check For Updates and within five minutes all the PT updates were there and installed immediately.
Thanks bro ! Nowadays I don't rush anything from those sneaky bastards.
@Just checked Updates again and results arrived in less than a couple of minutes !

Re: An MS/Windows fix for WIN 7 slow updates.
Hi MG,
Yep. I selected what I needed & the 6 updates (46.3 Meg), D/L'd in about 6 mins.
But, as "usual", one failed to install.
Ahh well.
May try a manual D/L & install of that (KB3135996) beastie, as I usually do.
[edit]
No probs with doing it manually.
