Window's Un-install GWX update.

Post by LIMPET235 »

Hi guys,
MS has released another update.
This one removes all those nasty reminders & any left-over files from the GWX debacle.
This update replaces the following previously-released software:
KB 3035583 -- Update installs Get Windows 10 app in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1
KB 3064683 -- Windows 8.1 OOBE modifications to reserve Windows 10
KB 3072318 -- Update for Windows 8.1 OOBE to upgrade to Windows 10
KB 3090045 -- Windows Update for reserved devices in Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 SP1
KB 3123862 -- Updated capabilities to upgrade Windows 8.1 and Windows 7
KB 3173040 -- Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 end of free upgrade offer notification
KB 3146449 -- Updated Internet Explorer 11 capabilities to upgrade Windows 8.1 and Windows 7
&, you can keep "NEVER 10" if you want. (It fixes the WU/WU/WU/WU errors.)

Better to not install this update, even if you not installed any adware, spyware and botnet updates,
as it only "replaces", not removes the bloat,
and who knows what it contains for real. :lildevil:

But thank you very much for info. =D>

What can I say?
If Steve Gibson, the security guru has checked it out & recommended it, then it should be
all clear sailing. Image
I installed it & it ran for quite a while, so it musta done "something useful." :)
Anyway, I've/you've still got NEVER 10 as a back-up, ie: unless MS went back on their word.

We'll never know exactly what MS put on our M/C's.
Talk about "Area 51" (Sneak City).
They ain't got nowt on MS.

I recently reinstalled Windows 7. Windows Update took more than 3 hours to check for updates.

Windows 7 SP1 Windows Update stuck checking for updates
http://superuser.com/questions/951960

I would like to burn a fix on a DVD for the next time I install the OS.

Any information about the convenience rollup update?

I don't want to install the GWX and diagnostic telemetry updates.

Hi,
I used this to fix the "slow to not functioning at all" Windows 7 updates.
KB3161608 > https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/search/ ... 8&form=dlc
but apparently, it's been updated again.
Check the page for more info.

I don't know the ins 'n' outs of the roll up.
But, it's supposed to include everything in one big lump, with no way for the user to select individual items to install.
"We" know what's best for "all of you."
Yeah sure you do!

Don't want to install the latest "fix", then go to grc.com & get NEVER 10.
You'll find it in the Freeware > Utilities section.

Thanks. I agree installing the convenience rollup update would be a bad idea.

The current fix is KB3020369 and KB3172605. (install in order)

A FWIW...
I just checked Windows Updates & MS has re-introduced, KB2952664.
This is just sent/set as Optional, but it serves the same purpose as before.
It checks your M/C etc, for compatibility for the upgrade to WIN 10.
So....Do not install it, just hide the damn thing.
& use NEVER 10.

(&....You all thought that MS had finished trying to get everyone onto WIN10, didn't you?)
:)

A tad more on the, ^, Slow update issue...

So even installing KB3184143 didn't help with the bloat or maybe you didn't install it like me? ;)

Ahhh, but I did install it.
I checked everywhere I could think of for anything related to GWX & found nothing much at all.
A few stragglers in the registry were "re-named" (for safety), & all appears to be fine.

I am at present, watching Steve's latest vocast (sn0580) & he says that the GWX fix is good.

You all might want to take a look or just listen to it.
Very interesting piece, (about 56 Mins in), on Firefox & why it's writing to disc every 15 Secs.
This is most important for those that are running (lower end) SSD's.
Google Chrome does the same, only more so.
Anyway, it's something to watch whilst waiting for any new probs or nutters to appear here.

I installed all updates except KB2952664, KB3021917, KB3068708 and KB3080149.

If I install KB2952664, then KB3150513 shows up. And I don't want monthly compatibility definitions. Woody thinks KB3021917 may circumvent the CEIP setting.

KB3035583 is not available for download. KB3035583 contains the Gwx.exe and Gwxconfigmanager.exe files.

I'm so happy the free upgrade offer ended in July.

* Get Windows X

KB2952664 - Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7
KB3021917 - Update to Windows 7 SP1 for performance improvements
KB3035583 - Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications
KB3150513 - September 2016 compatibility definition update for Windows

* Diagnostics Tracking Service

KB3068708 - Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry
KB3080149 - Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry

Same here, this makes no sense whatsoever (no surprises there)...after being offered a 'get rid of 10 related updates' update, I now have a pair of this 'update related update' hidden..one Recommended and one Optional. ](*,)
