Windows 7 KB4012204 for IE

Post by morat »

Why isn't the security update for IE in the security only quality update?

It doesn't show up as a separate download in Windows Update like the security updates for DotNet.

Microsoft just knows that everyone already removed/disabled the Internet Explorer long time ago, as it's obsolete, so no need to trash and bloat security only update. :vamp:

Well I still need to test sites in IE.

I guess IE patches are only integrated into the monthly rollups now.

Also odd thing now is that Microsoft still wants me to install whole KB4012215 "Monthly Rollup" and with it all old KBs with botnet (aka diagnostics, telemetry and data gathering),
when I already installed KB4012212 "Security-only update". ](*,)

Just a FWIW...
I had that KB4012215 installed but the other day, I un-installed it because I was trying to track down a problem with my PC.

After rectifying the problem, (a new HDD & an Acronis TI transfer were required), all is well again.

I tried the "normal"..."check for updates" but Windows reported none available.

I shall leave well enough alone & wait for the "Security only update" to become available..

@ LIMPET235 - "Security only update" wasn't, isn't and probably won't be ever available in Windows Update,
it's Microsoft thing for you to also install every new "feature" to push you migrate to Windows 10 and also see why you don't do that already :vamp:

Sorry.
I forgot to add that I frequent "askwoody.com" to see what the latest news is & what is recommended before I try a Windows update.
I then see what they have on the Window's D/L site.

&....Don't take any notice of my UA.
I'm still on version 20 on this WIN 7 PC, (+ a few others), but I have WIN 10 set up as a dual boot when/if required.
Never even fired the beast up since it was installed & all the crap was turned off.
I also have Linux MINT on a USB stick that I am trialling.

I use Belarc Advisor to check for missing patches after installing the security only updates. That's how I found out I needed the IE patch.

March 2017 security monthly quality rollup

The answer lies in the wording. One of them is a Rollup and the other one isn't.

Rollups are always cumulative, that is to say, they include patches that were released in the previous month's bundle and may supersede those that were already installed.

Security only patches aren't cumulative. So if you miss one batch of security only patches, installing the following month's releases won't replace them. But because IE patches are cumulative, they can't be included in a bundle which is non-cumulative.

Hid the KB4012215 update for my computer that has Windows 7 on it.
Don't want any of that "extra" stuff that I don't want on my system. [-X
Also have have KB4012212 "Security-only update" on my computer.
Don't like those "Monthly Rollup" updates. :!:
I always check for the "Security-only update".

Often frequent the "askwoody.com" site too before installing any Windows update.
Also have IE disabled on my computer.
Got an update message for a Windows update for IE KB4012204 a while back. :?
Just hid that update.
Have got "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install them" selected.
This way I still have control on what goes on my computer with Windows 7.
