MS Windows Update Error -- 80248015

Post by Ortho_Fan »

I thought I'd post this to prevent the members who still use Windows 7 from going through the several hours of hair pulling and blood pressure spikes I went through last night to fix it.

This explains the problem -- https://www.computerworld.com/article/3 ... 48015.html (Also -- https://www.ghacks.net/2017/12/04/getti ... not-alone/ )

Here's some comments on the MS "help" site -- https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 29e?auth=1

What happened to me was, when I clicked on the Windows Update icon last evening, a blank screen came up, which also froze my computer. I had to re-boot to get rid of it, then, when I tried WU again, it told me that the Update service was not operating. After much web searching, trying various fixes, I was able to get WU to check for updates, but was greeted with 8024815 Error.

Finally, I followed the instructions here in "Step 2" "Delete or Rename Windows update temporary storage folder" -- https://www.wintips.org/windows-update- ... ta-solved/

That got Windows update working again, but also stripped all the information in my Update History log. I soon found, though, that Microsoft Security Essentials starting spitting out errors when trying to update the definitions using the update button in the program, itself -- (there are numerous warning messages posted in the Action Center's Reliability History page the definitions could not be updated in spite of the fact that MSE displays a message that they WERE successfully updated.)

Anyway, it looks like there's very little I can do at this point but to put up with the bogus MSE definition update error messages, and hopetogod MS fixes it before patch Tuesday.

The Win 7 update problems are pretty well known and unfortunately of long standing. I have one Win 7 pc that I have been trying to update for well over year with no luck and I know what I am doing. Because it is a spare just in case the magic blue smoke escapes one of my other pc's It's no problem other than an annoying fly in the ointment. But don't hold your breath waiting for a quick fix from MS

And all that in spite of the fact that Windows 7 still holds the lion's share of the desktop/laptop market --

Windows 7 -- 45.43%
Windows 10 -- 26.65%
Windows XP -- 7.99%
Windows 8.1 -- 6.66%
Mac OS X 10.12 -- 4.01%
Mac OS X 10.11 -- 1.79%
Windows 8 -- 1.58%
Linux -- 1.56%
Mac OS X 10.10 -- 1.07%
Windows Vista -- 0.65%

Probably change on the next round of corporate PC upgrades usually a five years cycle. My guess is MS are waiting to EOL everything they can so a bug fix for anything other than Win 10
unless its a zero day security bug is dropping down the need to do list

Yep.
It's "their" fault.

Short answer: It’s Microsoft’s fault. They let the ExpiryDate pass without updating it....
&, but for now, Win7 users just get to wait until Microsoft acknowledges and fixes the bug.
In the interim, half of all Windows users around the world are unable to run Windows Update.
So, we're stuck ATM.
I only do Security updates anyway & I'm up-to-date at present.

Well, it looks like MS fixed whatever it was. Today, when I turned on my PC, I ran windows update and after about a five minute scan, it displayed three. Two were for Skype, which I don't use and hid, while the other was the definition update for Microsoft Security Essentials. I downloaded and installed it from Windows Update, and all was fine. I checked Windows action center and there were no warnings posted, as had been the case for the past two days.

Makes me wonder if I should take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10 -- https://www.cnet.com/how-to/microsoft-w ... -features/ (I did use the magnifier once.)

Yep.
During my search for any news on this issue, I read on one site, (can't remember which), that "they'd" released an update for the error.
Apparently, the XML file now reads as, <Expires on 2025-07-01>

Found it...
