FF & TB show connected to partitionwizard.com

Post by videobruce »

The Network tab of ProcessHacker shows Firefox v56 (& Thunderbird) connects to partitionwizard.com. After taking a closer look the ip address is 127.0.0.0 the 'loopback' address.
1. I'm not using PartitionWizard,
2. I get a connection to the loopback, but why is it showing PartitionWizard? #-o
Browsers that don't have a conventional horizontal Menu bar (where it's been for 25 years) are poorly designed. Period. Stop 'fixing' something that isn't broke!

I'm not using PartitionWizard
But do you have it installed?
If you open up IE, does PW also show up in there?
Fire 750, bring back 250.

No it's not installed. I wouldn't of asked if it was as it would be self evident. Opening Opera Classic doesn't list that address or name.
I haven't used IE for almost 2 decades.

BTW, newer isn't always better in response to the above posts sig. What might of been fixed or added, others get 'broken' or removed. M$ is the perfect example. (yes, I know is't a loopback, I stated that in my post).

Even if it were installed, I still would not have expected to be seeing it like that.

Maybe an extension, so restart FF (& TB) in Safe Mode & see if PW still turns up.

Can I assume this is a registry entry? I'll try SM and report back.

Maybe it is actually your antivirus interfering?

Same thing in Safe Mode.
PaleMoon & SeaMonkey show the same thing also.

No active A/V running.

Well, I searched the registry and two entries come up with that name "partitionwizard"
They pointed to "MiniTool" which is a portable application that I use occasional to check partitions on internal drives or external ones for other uses. No associated processes or services running or are loaded.
Their partition tool is called "Partition Wizard" but their web site is "partitionwizard". I didn't connect the two names together until now. :( But why the connection to FF is beyond me and why the loopback is labeled with that name. Unbelievable. #-o

The registry locations are;

Seeing as more than one browser is affected,
this is getting moved to the Tech. forum...

View your hosts file with a text editor at C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and see if it has any lines like 0 partitionwizard.com or 127.0.0.1 partitionwizard.com
If not, double check that no processes are running related to Minitool, and reboot.

"minitool" is "partitionwizard".

A lot of these small utility companies use multiple names for the same product or "affiliates" that simply rebrand the source.

Not that I'm familiar with MuiCache, it sounds like it should not have any bearing.

(Nirsoft) MUICacheView.
Each time that you start using a new application, Windows operating system automatically extract the application name from the version resource of the exe file, and stores it for using it later, in Registry key known as the 'MuiCache'.

This utility allows you to easily view and edit the list of all MuiCache items on your system. You can edit the name of the application, or alternatively, you can delete unwanted MUICache items.

Be aware that even if your delete MUICache items, they'll reappear in the next time that you run the application.

I'd look & see what (Sysinternals) Autoruns turns up.

"MiniTool" which is a portable application
I bet that even though it is "portable" it is still dropping some files, somewhere, a small .exe & .sys file, something like ampa.exe, [/windows/system32/] ampa.sys.
