Avoid pointless registration: bugmenot.com

Post by Spewey »

BugMeNot.com was created as a mechanism to quickly bypass the login of web sites that require compulsory registration and/or the collection of personal/demographic information.

Why not just register?
* It's a breach of privacy.
* Sites don't have a great track record with the whole spam thing.
* It's contrary to the fundamental spirit of the net. Just ask Google.
* It's pointless due to the significant percentage of users who enter fake demographic details anyway.
* It's a waste of time.
* It's annoying as hell.
* Imagine if every site required registration to access content.

Isn't this against most TOS agreements?

If it stops people spreading spam/private data, I dont think anyone will lose any sleep over it. Plus, as it says, it's hideously annoying.

Code: Select all

javascript:(function(){ function fixFileUrl(u) { var windows,u; windows = (navigator.platform.indexOf("Win") != -1);  /* chop off file:///, unescape each %hh, convert / to \ and | to : */  u = u.substr(windows ? 8 : 7); u = unescape(u); if(windows) { u = u.replace(/\//g,"\\"); u = u.replace(/\|/g,":"); } return u; } /* bookmarklet body */ var loc,fileloc; loc = document.location.href; if (loc.length > 9 && loc.substr(0,8)=="file:///") { fileloc = fixFileUrl(loc); if (prompt("Copy filename to clipboard, press enter, paste into validator form", fileloc) != null) { window.open("http://www.bugmenot.com/",""); } } else window.open("http://www.bugmenot.com/view.php?url=" + escape(document.location.href),""); void(0); })();

This bookmarklet will apply it to the current site that you're on, opening it in a new window.

But if it breaks TOS agreements, the websites will simply suspend those accounts, and this website will become slightly useless.

Then they'll just make more accounts. Anyway, as long as it works, all is good.
