Post by KrisM2 »

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ma/?src=ss
http://fasezero.com/lastnotice.html

I have 7 groups and about 180 tabs.

Sorry, didn't read the "lastnotice" as this whole situation with traditional extensions going away still upsets me every time I read read a story like that.

You can hope that someone else "adopts" that extension and is able to convert it to Web Extension format.

Other than that, look into using SeaMonkey as some of the "old timers" around here have done when traditional Themes were killed in Firefox a few years ago.

Thanks. I wonder if FF's addons session mgr, tabmixplus, tabgroups extensions would work in there?

Stop wondering and take some initiative.

Install SeaMonkey. Install the add-ons and see if they work. You can always uninstall SeaMonkey if it's not to your liking.

Thanks but I'll pass - probably going to have to deal with it eventually and it keeps me from exploring other browsers. Shifting to bookmarks.

But I wonder what other extensions will go...

Mozilla screwed up big time with Tab Groups, presented as the next great thing in Firefox 4, then only neglected and removed from later versions.

And it was indeed a neat feature worth of developing, unlike all the other crapware such as Pocket and Hello that they've added later on.

Quicksaver did a great job of rescuing it, although it never worked in private mode, but I'm not certainly blaming him for this : the feature was originally in Firefox and should have been kept and improved rather than wait for someone to come up with an addon and then finally deny them the necessary API to keep it alive.

If there's still someone with some respect left for Firefox and addon developers like Aris and Quicksaver, which have made Firefox less unbearable and mitigated the usability loss for many users, they should make an effort and release this API.

People who want to use a Chrome clone have been served already, why not care about the others as well.

I've edited my post above: TabGroups does indeed work in private mode as well , it was a conflict with another addon that led me to believe otherwise.

My apologies to Quicksaver for that... and to reiterate what already has been said, this is (yet another) great usability loss for some users (not that Mozilla cares in the slightest) and it should have never been abandoned in the first place.

The code was already there natively, as I recall work was being done behind the scenes to improve it in interesting ways (supporting various operations on tab groups), now all that's left is Quicksaver's code on github and the hope that someone uses it to build a new webextension-based version.

"Tabgroups Manager" has exactly the same problem -- will cease to work with the advent of FF 57. It seems there are no viable alternatives :( I'll be looking for a new browser :(

I gave up and went with vertical tabs reloaded. all the tabs down the side - no groups. Hopefully that survives 57! It's been easy to use.

"vertical tabs reloaded" doesn't cover anything like the same use case though, does it?

No. It is simply me walking away from an (apparently) unsolvable problem and coping. After all, I used groups for a long time.Without them, I still have to run my system in a way that is at least somewhat convenient for me. I tried a ton of extensions and wasted a lot of time before choosing this as a not too painful compromise. I am always on the lookout for different approaches. But I still have to use my system! :)

SeaMonkey never had FF's "tab groups".
"Tabs" are different enough between SeaMonkey & FF that most "tab" extensions (especially something like Tab Mix Plus) will not work in SeaMonkey (even after converting).
