Twitter video "grayed out"

Post by billku »

Hi -- I'm having an issue with videos on Twitter. I've searched the forums but nothing seems to match my issue. When I scroll twitter, I will see the embedded videos in tweets, but after a few seconds, the videos become "grayed out." (see below) I have started Firefox in safe mode and still get the same issue. This does not happen on other browsers, and affects all videos on twitter on Firefox for me. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much.

Live stream, perhaps.
Not working in SeaMonkey nor some ancient Chrome.

Suspect the "live" is not.
Fire 750, bring back 250.

Thanks, but it's not live streams, it's all videos, any video someone tweets, this is what it looks like for me. Very odd.

Does this one do it: https://twitter.com/mashable/status/988157243093913600

It plays fine for me. If you go to https://www.youtube.com/html5 is everything check-marked?

Yes, that page did it as well. And yes, everything is check-marked. Thanks so much for your help, any other ideas?

Works good for me, are there any drivers you need to update at all?

Yes, I'm not saying any of the links are bad, they work for me too in a different browser, I just can't get any Twitter video posts to work in Firefox. I went to my plugins page, everything seems up to date. Which drivers would you recommend I check? I went to the Youtube site recommended above for HTML5, all blue check marks, so I'm not sure that's the issue either, but I have no idea. Thanks everyone for the continued help.

As a test, create a new, clean Profile.
Visit twitter.
And ... ?

Yes, it works with a fresh profile! Does that mean an add-on I'm using is causing a conflict? Thanks so much for your help!

So... I disabled all my extensions on my default profile, and twitter videos still don't work. What other disabling can I do to find the conflict? Thanks in advance...

Go into your good profile (Help>Troubleshooting Info>Open Folder) and then exit Firefox.

Rename the prefs.js file in your profile to prefsGOOD.js and restart Firefox. I reckon Twitter vids will now work. I reckon it's one of your settings (either set by you or an extension) doing this, but it's hard to know which one.

For example, Vimeo will not play vids if the media.autoplay.enabled setting is set to false and so on. There's a lot of settings that might/might not be messing up Twitter.

I'm sorry, but the videos do play in the new "good" profile, so I'm confused, what am I accomplishing by renaming the prefs file in the good profile, and how does that help me view the twitter videos on my default profile (with all my extensions, settings, etc) where the problem lies? Thanks in advance, sorry for my confusion... (unless you're labeling my default profile where the problem lies as "the good one," then I understand)

UPDATE -- Again, not sure if this is what you were saying to do, but I renamed the prefs file in my default account where the problem lies, and the problem is still there, twitter videos are grayed out as shown in my first post.

Yep, that's the profile I meant.

Hmm...in which case this one is going to be hard to figure out. An problem entry in prefs.js was the most likely cause.

I'll have a think about this one.

Ugh, I know, it's a hard one, so weird. Thanks so much for giving it some thought. I may try to start with a new profile and import my extensions, settings, etc a little bit at a time and see which one is messing with Twitter, though it's certainly a pain to have to do that as my Firefox is complex...
