Closed tabs re-open when Firefox Quantum re-started (Linux)

Post by xanthon »

Hello. I have posted this on the support website but no solution has been found. This is the only remaining issue I have with Firefox Quantum.

There are two ways to re-open the previous session and I have tried both. At present I have used about:config with these settings :

Code: Select all

browser.showQuitWarning--------- true
browser.warnOnQuit--------------- true
browser.tabs.warnOnClose--------- true
browser.tabs.warnOnCloseOtherTabs--------true
browser.tabs.warnOnOpen----------true
The result is that when I use CTRL + Q to quit the browser, an option to save the session and quit is available. I choose that option.

EDIT : The problem is that tabs which were closed reappear when I next launch Firefox.

Has anyone else had this issue and does anyone know how to fix it?

Just what is your issue?

Ctrl+Q is a valid shortcut in Linux?
(Windows does not have that, instead using Ctrl+Shift+Q.)

What is your Home Page set to?
What does your desktop shortcut show?

Do you have "pinned tabs"?
(Does "pinned tabs" still exist in Quantum?)
Fire 750, bring back 250.

Thanks for replying. The issue is that referred to in the thread title. I should have mentioned it in the post as well. I have now amended the original post as follows :
EDIT : The problem is that tabs which were closed reappear when I next launch Firefox.
Yes, I quit with CTRL + q.

Thanks for replying.

My home page, new tabs and new windows is set to a blank page. I only see that if opening a new tab or window because I save the previous session.

Firefox is opened with the command firefox %u.

I have no pinned tabs; I have never used them.

So
because I save the previous session
is different from
Closed tabs re-open when Firefox Quantum re-started
When you said the latter, I thought you were implying that your session was restored.
But I now take it that while your session is restored, & that you want that, additionally, tabs that were closed prior to Quitting FF are also restored.

Do you Quit FF, cleanly, as in like, File | Exit (rather then doing something like killing FF using, kill -9 firefox.bin)?

%u expands to what?
Fire 750, bring back 250.

Thanks. I save the session when quitting; when Firefox is relaunched, it has the tabs that were open previously plus a few that were closed prior to the session being saved.

I quit Firefox with ctrl + q, then clicking the button to "save and quit".

%u is a common part of application launchers in Linux systems. The 'u' may refer to 'user'; I don't know. It isn't material. I am presently using Firefox 56 in my primary system; it uses the same command.

EDIT : I should add that I use different profiles for Firefox 56 and Firefox Quantum.

Perhaps the sessionstore.jsonlz4 is partly corrupted?

No particularly easy way to deal with .json, much less with lz4 thrown into the picture.

Perhaps, if you can forgo you session history...

exit FF
delete sessionstore.jsonlz4 (file) & /sessionstore-backups/ (directory)
(your session history will be deleted at that point)
(backup ahead of time...)
restart FF
browse as you would
quit periodically, saving your session
restart FF
see if only expected tabs are restored, or if closed ones are once again there

Might you have an extension affecting your session restore?

And I take it you have not run into this situation with FF 56?

Thanks therube and others who replied. I tried deleting that file and directory, starting with a new session. No, I have not experienced the problem with Firefox 56. An extension causing a problem in Firefox Quantum also, as a legacy add-on cause, caused no problem in Firefox 56.

I have to eat my words (of which I was quite sure). To my complete surprise, removing %u from the start command solved the problem.

I am very grateful for the support. Firefox 56 is slowing down late in the day so I want to install the new Firefox on my primary system.

I have been informed by a contributor on the support website that
Note that if you remove the '%u' then you won't be able to open external links in Firefox or drag file to the Firefox launcher.

The problem has recurred even using the amended command, i.e. 'firefox' without the string '%u'.

I've had this for a few versions now; I've discovered that dragging the tab off and then closing it prevents it from reappearing. ;-)

Thanks for replying. Could you explain that, please. I just tried to do that and the tab opened in a new window; I closed that tab then the new window. Is that what you mean?
