How can I disable automatic search from the address bar?
I have the following problem: I have a number of web servers on my LAN, which I address using their short hostname - ie not the fully qualified domain name. However, when I occasionally make a typo, Firefox immediately searches for this word on Google and gives me an irrelevant list of results; what I want is an error message, like "Couldn't find this address" or similar. I know there is an option to disable this in about:config, because I have had this working in a previous version before I upgraded to Quantum - but which option? My searches so far haven't found the right answer.

No, that isn't what I am after - I want to completely disable the search providers. All of them. I know I can delete all but the last one, but I do not want that functionality at all, I just want to get an error message whenever I type in the wrong hostname. At the moment, I have to type "http://" in front of the hostname to avoid ending up in some idiotic search.

To disable searching from the address bar:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste keyw and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the keyword.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false

Cool, changing that to false does allow keyword searches you've actually defined to still work, so that's cool.
