i dont believe it.. So I found through the many complaints about this that 'material icons' font is the issue. How can I substitute these for other fonts?

This is about special icon fonts that a lot of websites use these days to display small images.
Another example is the Font Awesome font.

To be able to see those icons you need to enable "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above".
