login oddness

Post by danll »

So I go to a magazine website I read frequently with Firefox 109.0. I try to log in. In my "Saved Logins" my Firefox has has my correct login e-mail and password for this magazine. But when I click on the login field for the magazine, very different e-mail addresses, including one that isn't even mine come up as suggestions. Duh, what? This is a Firefox issue, because on Chrome,it works perfectly. Now it works fine in Firefox for other logins, but not this one. What's going on? How do I fix it? Oh, I did erase that login and reestablished it, but it behaves the same way, where it again suggests somewhat bizarre e-mail addresses.

If those other suggestions do not have a key symbol at the far left then those are saved form data.
Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": "Remember search and form history"

Login suggestion as managed via about:logins always have a key symbol.

OK, I set that, and I cleared my history completely. Now, that login is gone in my "Saved Logins", and it isn't suggesting bizarre e-mails when I try to log in. But when I log in manually, it isn't remembering the login in "Saved Logins" like it is supposed to. How do I force it to do that?

"Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" is checked, but it isn't asking to save them, at least for this website. It once did, because as I said, the login info had originally been saved in "Saved Logins".

Note that using "Forget About This Site" removes logins as well, so use this with care.

You can manually create logins in the Password Manager (about:logins) if you do not want to enable "Ask to save Logins and Passwords for websites".
In this case you can use "Use Saved Login/Password" in the context menu as auto-fill isn't possible.
Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Logins and Passwords -> "Ask to save Logins and Passwords for websites"

Well, I DID enable "Ask to save Logins and Passwords for websites" and, for this website, it didn't do it. Wondering why.
I did manually enter the login for this website using "Create New Login". Firefox recognizes it, and slaps a formal icon onto the website name. But when I go to the signin page for that website, nothing comes up in "Username" and "Password".
I'm thinking that there is something hokey about this particular website.

You can check the login form in the inspector, a normal form has a username field with type="text" and a password field with type="password".

Can you post a link to that login page?

https://slate.com/sign-in?redirect_uri= ... ate.com%2F is the signin page

On this page, when you click on the e-mail or password field, nothing comes up from the "Saved Logins", where I HAVE saved a login for this site.

If I check that form in the context menu then I notice that this is an iframe from https://id.tinypass.com/
So I assume that you need to create/store a login for this origin.

EDIT: tested it and it works for https://id.tinypass.com

Wow. Thanks! That did it.
Now, I don't understand, though. If some other website uses tinypass for their login verification, why wouldn't I be handing them the wrong password?
I have to assume this is why Firefox didn't ask me if I wanted to save the password. Because it recognized that the login was really from some other site.
Does this mean that any website that uses tinypass for login verification won't let me save it in "Saved Logins"?
