This web site does not supply ownership information.

Post by justme77 »

I have an SSL cert from godaddy
When I visit my website there is no padlock!!!
So I click on the favicon and it says
This web site does not supply ownership information.

This I am ok with as I understand I am not spending thousands per year on Extended validation
However I think it is unfair of firefox to tell the user that "Your connection to this website is NOT encypted.".

That is untrue: IT is IS encrypted, it is just not owner verified.

IE says it is fine and secure (highlighting the lack of owner validation).
Safari and Opera give it the old padlock too.

Why not FF.

I ADORE FF, but can we have a more accurate warning message in cases of non-EV certs, as you know as well as I do, that any lack of padlock could scare a newbie off joining my site and providing account signup info etc #-o

I am using FF 3.5.2

Since Firefox 3.0 the padlock has been relegated to the status bar. You'll never see it on the address bar, unless you're using an extension for that purpose.

If there is no problem with your certificate, it should definitely say the connection is encrypted. See any standard SSL site as an example (e.g. https://mail.google.com). The only warning of sorts should be the text "Which is run by: (unknown)". For details, see Site Identity Button.

Can you post a link to the site in question?

Hey thanks for the prompt reply.
Perhaps I am being an idiot, and have in some way set it up incorrectly. <<<(Most likely reason for this!)
This is a secure page that causes the problem.

https://www.tymo.com/testmoz.html

If you look at this in other browsers they tell you the page is encrypted. Just not FF.

Any ideas on what I can do apart from buy an expensive EV cert.
MUCH appreciated, thanks so much in advance.

As Gingerbread Guy already mentioned:

And it looks to be working fine to me (new install of Firefox 3.5.2 with a default profile)

There have always been ghosts in the machine... random segments of code that have grouped together to form unexpected protocols. Unanticipated, these free radicals engender questions of free will, creativity, and even the nature of what we might call the soul...

It works fine for me too. Double-check that your system time and date are accurate. If that's not the problem, try starting Firefox in a new profile and checking the page there.

Ok guys thanks
I started a brand new profile and it worked.

So after trial and error I found that by disabling a bit.ly addon in my original profile corrected the problem.
When it is re-enabled... hey presto the error re-occurs.
So there you have it; the bit.ly add-on was the culprit.

Thanks again for all your excellent support.
Long live Firefox!
