When I try to open a link from another program such as thunderbird, the link does not open in firefox. Instead I get the following message:

Code: Select all
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Create an association in the folder options control panel

Any idea how to fix the problem?

Think for yourself. Otherwise you have to believe what other people tell you.

Try to set e.g. IE as default browser and then back to Firefox. Maybe a windows setting is broken.

Ok, it appears to work in Outlook, but links in Thunderbird won't open.

I'm having the exact same problem, and it only started when I installed Thunderbird 3.0. I also just switched to Firefox 3.5.6, so that may be involved in this, too.

Any ideas?

"links won't open"

is FF already running when you try to open the link, or is FF dead at the time?

If you're asking me (Amby19), hotstart13, my problem seems to have been fixed by following the instructions Daifne provided here.

Don't ask me why, because Firefox was already set as the default browser (and always has been on my computers for years), but once I entered "[MyPath]firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser" as instructed at the page pointed to by Daifne (Force Firefox to make itself the default), hyperlinks started opening properly again.

But to answer your question, FF was already running when I tried it previously. Perhaps TB 3.0 needed to start FF itself before it would work properly?

At any rate, the problem seems to be gone.

That did not work, either. I tried it a dozen times with different links.

But as I wrote above, it works like it used to now.
