thunderbird junk mail, how to control or eliminate?

In Thunderbird, how can I control Junk Mail and Spam? There does not seem to be an available explaination in the Support postings I read. My email junk is beyond my mental capacity and getting worse. I simply label items a 'junk', and they return and seem to generate more. A
Where are filters and firewalls for this? How do I delete FOREVER most of this Junk? It's a flood! It's a tornado of Spam! It's the hurricane of Marketeers! Help!

how to enable/activate Junk Mail Controls, Thunderbird 3

after setting the six settings depicted above, restart Thunderbird.

when new junk comes in to the Inbox, click the Junk button in the toolbar

how to train Junk Mail Controls about "good" mail*

empty out the Junk folders
in the left-panel, click a folder of "good" mail
click the upper-right panel
hit Ctrl A
hit Shift J

Moving to Thunderbird Support

When I try to do this, no matter what happens, I cannot get any of my address books to appear in 'Do not mark as junk if the sender is in...'!
