Removing Firefox and libsmime3.dylib (Mac)
In the course of doing a software update on Firefox on a MAC, the following message came up:
The operation cannot be completed because the item "libsmime3.dylib" is in use.
Your support site indicates that I should remove Firefox and do a clean install. However, dragging Firefox to the trash results in the same message about libsmime3 being in use. Is there another way to remove Firefox on a MAC?

Re: Removing Firefox and libsmime3.dylib (Mac)
Reboot and see what happens. I'm on OSX 10.6.4 and FF 3.6.8 and there is no such file on my machine. [EDIT: it is in the FF application package.]
Also removing the application does nothing since all the relevant files are in your profile.

if you use cisco anywhere connect vpn, you might want to check here:

or try opening terminal and typing: sudo killall vpnagentd

Re: Removing Firefox and libsmime3.dylib (Mac)
Solved previously or not, I am grateful for jojo's note as it was not solved for me.
I just this evening had a problem related to the upgrade and the only thing that released the libraries for delete was the killing of the cisco anywhere agent. exactly on base. perplexed as when I fuser'ed the library it did not show what process had a handle - would have pointed me directly to the vpnagent.
not sure if cisco has introduced some new constraint.
anyway, thanks jojo;

Re: Removing Firefox and libsmime3.dylib (Mac)
+1 to jojo's advice working for me when I tried to install the new beta. No response from the OP to "see what happens" is not a definite solution, especially if the problem could only arise (and thus be remedied) on systems with the Cisco VPN client.

Re: Removing Firefox and libsmime3.dylib (Mac)
still having trouble closing the libsmime.dylib file. when i open lsof -V, the list appears, but then when i type in grep libsmime3.dylib nothing happens, and sudo killall doesn't seem to work after, either. i'm a bit new to this, any suggestions?

I tried the "sudo killall vpnagentd" thing, and get the same message still.
