Header/Footer preset page info is cut off when printed.[Mac]

Post by youngjane »

I am using Firefox 3.6.9. Ever since updating to that version, I have noticed that the header and footer info that I have preset to print on every printed page in Firefox (title, date & time, URL address, page # of #) is getting cut off. The preview appears perfect, but when actually printed the text is cut off a little:

Header is cut off at the top of the paper in both height and width: I have it preset to print the Title on the upper left corner, but when printed, the first few letters of the title are missing. The top edges of the entire title are also cut off. On the upper right where I have it preset to print the date and time, the Am or PM indication on the far right corner of the page is cut off. The top half of the entire date and time text is also cut off.

Footer is also cut off in the same manner as header. I have it preset to print the URL on lower left corner, but when printed the first few letters of the web address are cut off, and the bottom half of all the footer letters are also cut off. On the lower right corner I have it preset to print the page # of # of pages, but again the text is cut off on the far right so I can't tell how many total pages I should have. It only prints "page 1 of" (the # is missing). The bottom half of the entire page # of # footer text is also cut off.

None of this happened before when I had prior versions of Firefox. This does not happen with my Safari browser. I am using Mac OS 10.5 8. Help!

Hi,
Have you checked the border/s setting?

Thank you for your help. I do not know how to do that. Are you referring to the printer itself? I looked at the link you suggested, and do not see anything there regarding borders. Did I miss it?

Try to experiment with the settings in here.

Hi,
Sorry. I should've mentioned it.
Go to File > Page Setup & adjust to suit.
There's also Print Preview there, where you can adjust the size.

Thanks for that added info. I checked this out and see nowhere to adjust the margins for the printable range. I do see in the manual for my printer, a maximum area listed for what part of the paper can be printed upon. No info there that indicates this is adjustable by me.

I can adjust the size (percentage) up or down for the document or web page, however, the margins for the header and footer presets are not a listed option to change. May have to call Brother and see if they can assist me. Again, until this recent release of the new Firefox, I did not have this issue at all. It's as if FF increased their printable page size, and now my printer cannot properly print the preset header and footer info without some of it being cut off. Although in a way that makes no sense either, because one would think that would just cause the text to wrap onto successive pages, and not affect the placement of my preset header and footer info.

Maddening, as I use my printed material for research, and if the web address and other info is getting cut off, that seriously affects my ability to go back in later and check that web page.

Hi...
In the File drop down, there should be a menu containing the required actions.
eg; Page Setup, Print Preview & Print.
In Page setup, there will be 2 tabs, one for Format & Options, the other for Margins & Header/Footer.
Try adjusting them to ~10 mm or so.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I do not have the same options available that you do. Under the File Menu, I do have Page Setup, however no such tabs exist for me. Here is what I have:

Settings: Page Attributes
Format for: Brother HL-5140
Paper Size: US Letter
Orientation: Portrait or Landscape
Scale: Percentage

Under the Print Menu, there are no options to adjust the placement of the headers and footer. The only option to customize is the content, you want to appear in those areas. Firefox is selected under the Pages section. Ignore Scaling and Shrink to Fit option is selected, but this has no affect on placement of headers and footers.

I have checked throughout the menus and do not see such an option listed anywhere to adjust my margins. Perhaps this is due to the limitation of my printer driver, versus the operating system? Or perhaps because you are Windows and I am a Mac user there are different options?

I see that you are using Firefox 3.5.12. Again, I had no issues with this till I stupidly upgraded to FF3.6.9, which I very much regret now.

Hi,
I'm sorry that I cannot assist any further with your Mac problem.
Unfortunately, our resident Mac guy is away ATM but will return in a few days.
There's one or 2 others that may be able to help, so I added Mac to the title.
Hopefully, they will help you out.

FWIW...
I don't think that a change of version would have caused this.

Thanks for the update. I wonder why the issue then? Nothing else whatsoever has changed with my Mac, except the FF update to 3.6.9. I'll wait to see what the Mac specialists say. Thanks again.

Apple recently released some printer driver updates. Did you run your Software Update to see if anything needs updating?

Also, when you try to print a page in FF, do you see an option that says "Ignore scaling and shrink to fit page width?" When you do a print page, the window dialog that shows could be the short form. If you look to the right of your printer name, you should see a triangle. Click on it to expand the options.

Thank you for your help. No printer driver updates for me. I do have the ignore scaling and shrink to fit option. Have tried printing it with and without that box checked, and results are almost identical. None of it affects the placement of the header and footer presets unfortunately, nor is there anywhere that I can find to adjust the placement of them.

Wait! Now here's something . . . a spontaneous fix?! While I have been whining on about this issue, I just had to print an email, and lo and behold . . . there are my headers and footers in the right spots, and with all their body parts. No missing particles of text! How did that happen? Did the Firefox Angels smile down upon me? Oh my. I must be dreaming.

Now if only I could get Firefox to print out my emails that are over one page correctly, I'd be in Heaven. Just posted on that issue which has been plaguing me for a while now with the last two updates. I have to use Safari to print emails that go beyond one page because FF is wreaking havoc with them.

Found it,

The problem is with the selected printer, even if you dont print from it.
Select a different printer and then save as PDF it would work fine.

If there isnt another option, either remove and make the printer again or just add another printer from system pref and then select the new one and the save as PDF
i've noticed some times this happens when you run out of ink in a printer its a bug caused by the printer driver i presume

Thank you for posting. The problem seems to be somewhat fixed, so I'm assuming Hotmail tweaked something on their end. Most of the header/footer is now visible, with just a portion of letters cut off. Enough remains that I can tell what page I was on. Perhaps this is as good as it gets with Firefox and Hotmail. Safari does not have this same issue.
