Adobe Flash Plugin Broken

Post by euro888 »

Hello,

I have checked the forum and the knowledge base, but have not found a solution to my problem. (I have found similar threads, but they are not exactly what I'm seeing.)

First I will list version information of my computer and Firefox.
Second, I will state the symptoms I'm seeing.
Third, I will list what I have already tried.

So here we go...

========
System/browser version info:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, Version 6.1 (Build 7600)

Mozilla Firefox: 3.6.1.2
Firefox add-on: Shockwave Flash 10.1.102.64

From the OS control panel:
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX 10.1.102.64
Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin 10.1.102.64
====================

The major symptom that I'm seeing is that any webpage using the Adobe Flash Player add-on fails to play video content. It all seemed to work fine up until about a month ago, then it (Adobe Flash Player add-on) stopped working.

Here are a few websites on which I try to view video via Flash and their particular symptoms:

1.)
This is a Yahoo news site. I'm trying to play a video news story:
http://finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker/19 ... T,aapl,bni

Within a few seconds of trying to load the page, I get the following message on the Adobe Flash Player Screen: "Sorry but this video is no longer available." This plays fine on IE and Chrome... Of course, I know IE doesn't use the add-on. I don't know what Chrome uses. The point is, the video in question IS available, despite what the message says.

2.)
In this case, I'm trying to watch the latest John Stewart episode on Comedy Central:
http://www.thedailyshow.com/

When I bring up the Comedy Central webpage, the video never loads. The little "swirly circle" spins for a while. A still photo of John Steward might come up... but nothing ever really loads. Sometimes, the player screen simply remains black.

One interesting thing here is that when I click on the "connection" icon at the bottom-right of the player, the following info is displayed:
Current Available Bandwidth: 0 kbps (This is ALWAYS 0)
Current Video Stream: 0 (This is ALWAYS 0)
Max Video Stream: 825 kbps (This number will vary)

(Yes, I have tried other physical locations with various connection speeds.... The results, or lack thereof, are always the same.... no video playback.)

Again, this video plays fine in IE or Chrome.
=========================

Hulu (Trying to watch old Lone Ranger episodes :wink: ).

The lone ranger: http://www.hulu.com/watch/84787/the-lon ... one-ranger

The leading commercials play (of course) but actual video just goes to black for a long time, then eventually a message displays which says, "Sorry but we are unable to stream this video. Please check your internet connection and try again."

Like in the other examples above, the video plays fine in IE and Chrome.

=====================================================================

Now here is what I've tried so far to fix the problem... to no avail...

1. Deleted Firefox history and cookies.
2. Uninstalled Adobe Flash and Flash add-on, then reinstalled.

3. Followed all the steps from the Firefox support knowledge base:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Fla ... not+update

Checked for multiple versions of Flash (there were no old versions still hanging around.)
Uninstalled and reinstalled Flash (I'd already tired that, but did it again in following this guide)
Checked again for duplicate plugins by typing "about:plugins" in the address bar, but only the one
current version of flash was listed.

Here is what "about:plugins" had to say about the current version of flash:
File: NPSWF32.dll
Version: 10.1.102.64
Shockwave Flash 10.1 r102

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/x-shockwave-flash Adobe Flash movie swf Yes
application/futuresplash FutureSplash movie spl Yes

=========================================================================

So that's it! I really love my Mozilla Firefox browser and refuse to use IE. I guess Chrome is ok, but I really hate needing to use it just to view videos. I want to remain loyal to Firefox but have become very frustrated with this Flash Player Add-on thing.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. [-o<

Try both of these suggestions:
LoudNoise wrote:Right-click on any Flash video
Click on "Settings"
Select the Display tab
Uncheck “Enable hardware acceleration"

In an open URL window, enter "about:config".
Yes, you will be careful.
Enter "dom.storage.enabled" in the Filter window.
Toggle to "True".
Close and restart browser.
Ab subabsurda numquid ad veritas. "From the somewhat absurd possibility to reality."

Check to make sure plugin-container.exe is allowed access by your Firewall.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

patrickdempsey hit it right on the head...I run Firefox and it recently quit running videos. It turns out that at some point when a security request popped up by my firewall software I must have blocked it and it did so permanently. Going into the firewall and resetting the plug-in container to either outgoing or full allowed it to play again.

I also mistakenly set my firewall to block plugin-container. Once I unblocked it, the videos started playing.
I was able to play the videos on internet explorer; it was just firefox that wouldn't.

Thanks for your help mcDreamy.
