bookmarks on the toolbar are occasionally missing.
I see lots of posts under the general description "disappearing bookmarks" but not the exact experience that I'm having, as far as I can see. This is an intermittent event:
I have a full bookmarks toolbar, comprising mainly directories. Normally, when I start FF, they turn up as expected.
Sometimes, though (about 50%), The toolbar appears but it's empty. I click on View/Toolbars and the bookmarks toolbar is ticked. I click on it to deselect it and the empty toolbar disappears. I click on View/Toolbars again, and re-tick the bookmarks toolbar and it reappears in full.
I've tried starting a new profile, but no luck. I did see, in another thread, a reference to multiple copies of FF, a problem I've had occasionally when I shut FF down and restart shortly afterwards.
Has anybody any new tips for dealing with this annoying event?
Thanks,
Ian

I've tried starting a new profile, but no luck.
This doesn't tell us much... do you mean that you created a new profile and duplicated all your stuff to it?... or what. If you dup'd everything over to it then you probable "also" dup'd the problem... (maybe an extension?)
If you're using the standard Bookmarks toolbar then you should be able to start Firefox in safe-mode, test it many times (start/stop etc...) to see if the problem goes away. If it does then the problem is most likely an extension (or non-default theme) causing the problem... Anyway, try that safe-mode testing and post back here.
This is only for Firefox safe-mode...Don't check off any of it's safe-mode boxes...

Also, the fact that you end up with more than one Firefox running may indicate that you do have a problem ext.... that stops Firefox from closing.

Re: bookmarks on the toolbar are occasionally missing.
Hi, Thanks for that. I created two new profiles, one based on Default, which didn't have any effect. I then renamed Default having just closed a running version. Again, no improvement. I'll follow your advice and report back. Meanwhile, thanks,
Ian

Hi again,
I restarted using the Help\Restart with add-ons disabled menu and got just the bare essentials, with neither Bookmarks, nor Norton toolbars. I restarted FF from scratch (full toolbars appeared) and re-ran the above. Same result. Have I misunderstood your instruction?
Thanks,
Ian

Having the same issue. I check the processes on the system when it happens and there is only one FF session running. A restart of FF clears it up. I've not nailed down any particular activity/s that trigger the behavior.

Sorry, since you have your Bookmarks toolbar displayed in your normal Firefox run I thought that it would also display in safe-mode... I just tested that out by starting one of my test profiles in safe-mode and it disabled the toolbar... so, my asking you to do that was a waste of time. Late EDIT... I just tried my test profile in safe-mode and not the Bookmarks toolbar is there... so, not sure what's going on here.
I do know that the Norton Toolbar does cause problems for people... maybe it's doing it to you?... do you have other toolbars also? As a test, I would disable all non-basic-Firefox toolbars (the extensions) and stop/start Firefox in normal mode to see how it reacts.
And... you might want to list all of your Extensions here for us to review them... I use this extension to make that type of posting easier...

Not that it's the answer but I noticed in your extension list that you have both Smooth Wheel and Yet Another Smooth Scrolling. They both do the same thing so you might want to review them and choose one.
With respect the main problem... it's most likely an extension causing the problem or a non-default theme... the first test would be to start Firefox in safe-mode and keep testing in that mode until you determine whether it's good or not.
Also, here's a link to some know problem extensions...

Re: bookmarks on the toolbar are occasionally missing.
This is getting ridiculous. If it wasn't that Google Chrome doesn't yet support the Norton Toolbar (haven't checked recently), I'd switch. I'll just grin and bear it till then, hoping that the next upgrade to FF sorts the problem.
Thanks anyway,
Ian

If it wasn't that Google Chrome doesn't yet support the Norton Toolbar
It's the other way around... Norton has to do "their" job and get their stuff working properly with browsers... BUT, in my experience with their product... they are always behind the ball. I used to use Norton for many years until it started hanging up Firefox from closing...and, it also hung some Win-Office apps. too... I posted to this board about the hangs and one of the Moderators (her profession is to clean/fix peoples PC's) suggested that I switch to Avast. I did and I've never looked back... all problems went away and the huge resources that Norton used up on my older PC were eliminated... you might want to think along those lines.

Re: bookmarks on the toolbar are occasionally missing.
Point taken. I've a few months to run on my subs to Norton, but I'll check out Avast. I also recognise that FF is open source and free, so I can't be to demanding.
Thanks,
Ian

Re: bookmarks on the toolbar are occasionally missing.
If you are saying, in part or full, that just >> initially, after adding a/some Fx bookmark(s) on the bookmarks toolbar these new bookmarks are later occasionally missing, I have had the same experience for some time now. My experience is that a doing a simple "Start> Turn-off Computer.>then turnoff" will then later reveal all Fx bookmarks. Otherwise, I do suggest that you follow Dfoulkes lines of thought as she is well experienced in Fx Bookmarks and unlike some limited others in this forum, plays no "I know" power games. My opinion, emphasis added.

Re: bookmarks on the toolbar are occasionally missing.
It's quite a simple, if annoying fault on mine. If the bookmarks don't appear, the toolbar, blank, still does. The option is ticked on the menus. It's an easy job to untick it, which causes the empty toolbar to disappear, then retick it to get the toolbar and contents back I'll live with it for now. It's a lot quicker than turning the PC off/back on.
Thanks all,
Ian

Do you have any extension that relate specifically to Bookmarks?... if you do then I would disable them and then stop/start Firefox a bunch of times to see if you can catch the problem... if the problem goes away then I'll bet your problem is in there... or... disable all your extensions and do the same test. That's about the only way to figure it out.
And, by chance do you use Google toolbar or any other non-basic Firefox toolbars?

Re: bookmarks on the toolbar are occasionally missing.
I hope I haven't started a cat fight!
I can't see any add-ons or extensions relating to bookmarks. The only other toolbar is Norton's which works perfectly in FF but not yet in Chrome (update due out of Symantec in September, I believe). As I sadi above, it's a minor irritant and I'll live with it. I may give Chrome another go when Symantec get their act together.
Incidentally, I read somewhere that Chrome was a lot less memory-heavy than FF but found it generated several copies instead of one large copy (currently sitting at 331MB after a long day's surfing), therefore not as user friendly as claimed.
Cheers,
Ian
