Many crashes after an update are from your firewall see here under Help! I can't Connect to the Internet

Same issues with Firewall OFF......Windows Firewall is always OFF......I use the Firewall with VIPRE......I'm certainly no expert, but seems strange that the Firewall could cause such a problem.....I have no issues connecting to the Internet.

Clear the browser cache (use menu path Tools->Options->Advanced->Network tab->click on "Clear Now" button.)

Delete any cookies relating to the site(s) involved (Tools->Options->Privacy->Show Cookies button).

If you still have problems, try starting Firefox in Mozilla Safe Mode -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Well, cache and cookies made no difference......but problem did not occur while in Safe Mode.......guess that means an Add-On/Ext is causing the problem?

That would be correct. Try disabling half your installed extensions then close and restart the program. (Disable them by using menu path Tools->Addons->Extensions->click on "Disable".) See if the problem is present. If not, enable half the remaining extensions and close and restart the application. Repeat this procedure until the problem reappears. Then disable the last enabled set and re-enable one by one to identify the problem source.

Looks like I've found it......it was in the top half ( 9 ) that I disabled first......appears it's " Load Tabs Progressively 1.6 " causing the problem.

Good job. Have you tested it with only "Load Tabs Progressively" enabled?
