Autocomplete

Re: Autocomplete
Just a update to my last post, the script works great to bring up my previous searches and I think it's much better than what Google did to shaft their users. But I have noticed 2 small issues with the script.
#1 just like snitzel said you sometimes have to double click the back button to get away from a web page and return to your Google search results, if you turn off the script everything works like normal but of course the autocomplete doesn't function. (not a big deal but sometimes a pain)
#2 when you bring up the Google homepage (https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en) the cursor does not pop into the search box- what happens on my version of Firefox (3.6.28) is that it pops up a find bar at the bottom of the page that fades out after a few seconds. (again not a big deal but it takes some getting used to)

Yep, those issues are quite annoying, but for now there's no other solutions.
I'm just wondering why THE HELL Google programmers have nothing better to do than introducing new unwanted "features" (???)!
By the way, I tried I think all the scripts for Greasemonkey which should enable autocomplete, but the one I posted seems to be the only one which works with Google.
Another thing: if you have trouble with some sites, for example Facebook, which shows its window when you search something, so that your searches interfere with it, just go in the script option and add the site to the pages excluded, for example:
http://www.facebook.com/*

Re: Autocomplete
For me it's working perfectly except for one thing:
clicking the back button to return to the previous web page no longer works
clicking back redirects to current page repeatedly in an unbreakable loop
When I disabled the script, no more autocomplete but also no more back-button re-looping
Sigh (*,)
Thanks, Google!

Re: Autocomplete
Here's a google group thread about the issue, but no solutions, other than somebody posting a link to the autocomplete script

more problems
Update to my last.
Yes..sometimes I must "double back click" to go back...and sometimes, I have to war-dial the back button.
Now..it seems...that after clicking in the search bar to get my saved searches to pop up...I click the one that I want, and then hit I'm feeling lucky...like I have done for the past few years...and then most recently as a half hour ago...and after hitting I'm feeling lucky, my Google home page pops back up...slightly altered (google's options at the top left are now widely spaced) and when I retry my search attempt..my saved searches appear, as well as Google's suggestions underneath.
Trying the I'm feeling lucky button repeats the action...searching for and then clicking just crashed Firefox...which happens a lot in the last few releases...oddly enough...I restarted my last session, and this message was still in the box...as I was almost done typing it. That may be due to the "Session Manager" add on, I don't know.
As far as the Facebook search thing...I added an exception to the autocomplete script...and that sort of works.
Anyway...this blows.

Re: Autocomplete
Thank you Mr. Wolf....absolute genius. I do still have the same problem that shnitzel has though, the cursor doesn't automatically go into the search toolbar, you have to click it first. Anyone found a fix for this yet?

Re: Autocomplete
One more observation about the autocomplete function using Firefox and the Google search page "https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en" , it only seems to affect Firefox, I always use Firefox but today I went to my Windows Internet Explorer version 7 in XP pro and guess what- the autocomplete with my personal searches still works. Autocomplete even still works on- http://www.google.com/ and the Firefox official home page- http://www.google.com/firefox?client=fi ... S:official Go figure out this one..... any ideas?

Nope. It's not a Firefox only problem. I've just tried with Internet Explorer 8 on XP and have the same problem, with any Google page, I don't know if with Internet Explorer 7 autocomplete works.
As I said in a previous post, I tried with Chrome and had the same issue.

Re: Autocomplete
I made the changes & everything seemed to be back to normal. But when I went back & entered a word or two from a few hours earlier the autocomplete did not work. I kept entering the one word & after 3 or 4 times it finally showed up in autocomplete. I thought this was a one-time glitch because it seemed to work later on.
But just a few minutes ago I had the same problem.
Has anyone else experienced random problems?

Re: Autocomplete
I use http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0.
I installed Greasemonkey and then ran the script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7347
I still can not use autocomplete based on words that I previously entered in the search box.
However all my search data & autocomplete appears to be available when using the Firefox help search function at mozilla.org. http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/home?as=u.
I tried greasemonkey on a computer with firefox 3.6.26 and on a computer with firefox 10.0.3 esu - both computers - same problem.

Re: Autocomplete
The recommended Greasemonkey addon is garbage. It doesn't autocomplete words previously typed into the Google search box. Clicking the Go back one page button results in refreshing on the same page and you can't get off of it unless you hold the button down and click way down on the drop down box.
I hope that either Google returns its search page to like it was or else someone creates a suitable addon.

Re: Autocomplete
I think you both have some kind of other problem: I can see my previous searches I typed, so can other users, reading the comments here!
As reguards the go back button, you can't do anything, except going back using Back/forward dropmarker. I'm using this add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker/?src=ss
which restores it in the newest Firefox versions. (By the way, I'm sorry to say Firefox is becoming a champion as Google in changing/removing features giving a damn about user's needs... )
It's hard to say if Google will solve this problem; actually, I bet they don't even consider it such!
Ah, I was forgotting that that URL (http://www.google.com//webhp?complete=0&hl=en) was a solution to avoid their autocomplete feature!
By the way, it's a while I've been searching a solution to the problem that words are not highlighted anymore when you use Google cache, if you're logged in with your account. The only solution is to log off...

Re: Autocomplete
I fixed my Google problem! Now I can use autocomplete based on words that I previously entered into the search box. First, I'll show what I want Google to do as before. Second, I'll show how to fix it.
Let's say I type the following into the Google webpage search box:
how to disable Google personal search results
After I hit enter I see about 35,700,000 results. I then want to change my search to the following:
how to disable Google personal search
All I want to do is put my mouse cursor into the Google search box and back space "results" out the box. It now works and I get about 561,000,000 results.
I may also want to back space "disable" out of the box:
how to Google personal search
Then I want to open another tab, click my Google link and type "google". The following should drop down from inside my search box:
how to disable Google personal search results
how to disable Google personal search
how to Google personal search
Here's how I fixed the problem:
1) As Mr Wolf 80 stated (in post #8): Install Greasemonkey and then this script:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7347.
2) Click the arrow next to the greasemonkey toolbar button, make sure both Enabled and Autocomplete On have checkmarks next to them.
3) Use the following command as your Google search:
http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&pws=0 or
https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&pws=0.
4) Click on the settings cog at the top right of the Google page, click Search settings.
Under "Personal results" select "Never show instant results or personal results." You may have to reboot a few times and check to see if the settings are saved.
5) Don't delete the third party cookies.
#3 solution was found at: http://www.briangardner.com/disable-goo ... al-search/
#4 solution was found at: http://lifehacker.com/5875156/how-to-tu ... ch-results
The above series of steps work on three computers, one with XP and firefox 3.6.28, another with XP and firefox 10.0.3esr, and another with windows 7 and firefox 3.6.26.

Re: Autocomplete
So..after a week or so of this added "lack of functionality", there seems to be no answer. The back button is broken, the cursor will not start in any of the appropriate search boxes; like Google, or my bank bookmark, and a few others, where the cursor used to be....about a week ago. I am now bogging FF down with extra add-ons..just to even get this far. To make matters worse,I shut down FF, as the resource hog problem still persists...showing it is taking up 900,000k+ ram..with only two tabs open...and upon restart..the icons are now so tiny, a few of them are distorted. Check to see if the small icons was checked in the customize feature...it wasn't...uninstalled..restarted...reinstalled...still has the same problem(S). Uninstalled, reinstalled FF V.5...same old BS. After many successful years...and pleading with everyone to use this once great browser..in a matter of a few days, the whole ease of internet searching has come to a halt. I'm afraid that even trying all of the other browser options, they will still suck more than this. PLEASE FIX! Does Mozilla read these forums?
