Is there a possibility to download files via drag and drop?

Post by LoremIpsumDolorSitAmet »

Hi,

I'm searching for a possibility to download files via dragging a link from firefox and dropping it into any (windows)folder.
Standard behavior for this action is to create an internet-shortcut to the file.
But instead of this I want to download the file (the link referes to) to that folder.
(similar to the behavior when dragging a picture from ff and dropping it into a folder)

Searched the web for an answer to this, but sadly did not find any...
Hope anyone here can help me!

1.) is this possible with firefox / an addon? or is this rather a problem of the windows explorer drop functionality?
2.) how can this be done?

Thanks in advance!

This extension when you hover an image lets you save it with one click:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... e-toolbar/

There used to be some drag extensions but they became unreliable, so as far as I know this is not possible.

Thanks for your answer.
For images everything works fine for me.
What I want to have is the same functionality (of dragging a picture and dropping it into a folder, so that it is downloaded to that location) for any file (given by an url).

Does anybody know if this is possible?

Thanks in advance!

That works with images. You can drag an image from a web page into a folder, for instance, and the file will be saved in the folder.

Yes, I know it works for images,
but I want THAT functionality for other files, too!

how does this work / is there a possibility to do this?

With links that look like links, dragging them to a folder just puts a shortcut in that folder, not the item.

Yes :)
That's what is done actually.

So me question now ist: What can/must I do/change, that the FILE is downloaded to the folder?

I use this for images and files
http://www.firefox.net.cn/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29894
You can get the same behavior as for images(save directly into certain folder)by manually editing the about config settings(because such option does not exist in the add-on options for links)
In the address bat type about:config hit enter and click on the button(you'll have a button if you never gone there).Search for
extensions.easydragtogo.link.actionSets
and depending on the direction you want, add to it save-df-img?
? is for the folder number you decide to be for links from the Images tab of the addon settings

It also have an option to create a folder with the name of the site from which you downloaded the file

Thanks for your message, but I don't understand any chinese or what this is.
I did not find the extension you mentioned / it was not compatible to ff 11.
If this had worked: where there really the possibility to drag a link to a folder so that the file gone be saved?
or is it just possible to save to a preconfigured folder using mouse gestures?

A successor to one of the former drag extensions is this, dragit:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... rag-de-go/
It basically makes dragging save to a predefined folder.

This lets you define filters so certain filetypes go to certain folders:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ve-folder/

I don't know of any that save to a folder is being dragged to, although as you say that does work for images.

I use Free Download Manager. With it running in the taskbar, drag any link to the FDM icon and when it opens drop it in the window. It'll download to any folder you tell it to. Kind of a round about way, but I don't know of any other. Looking forward to finding out if anyone has a simpler solution. :)

1.Click on the easy_dragtogo-1.1.7 beta8-fx.xpi on the page.
2.Yes,it is compatible with FF11
3.Yes can automatically save a link(file)directly to a certain folder without questions(it requires manual editing of the settings in about:config)or bring the window from which you choose where to save the file.

Normally auto saving was designed for images only(the auto save to folder menus exist only in the Images settings)but you can by manually editing the about:config option
extensions.easydragtogo.link.actionSets
set some mouse dragging direction to save to certain folder

For example my settings are
extensions.easydragtogo.link.actionSets;RLUD| A:do-nothing R:link-fg L:link-bg U:do-nothing D:save-df-img2

RLUD means right, left,up and down mode to be used
A: - function for any direction(this won't have any effect because I'm using RLUD mode)
R: - dragging right
L: - dragging left
U: - dragging down
D: - dragging up

link-fg - open link in foreground
link-bg - open link on background
save-df-img2 - save to custom folder 2(you can define in from the Images settings)

All of the settings are available normally from the Links options except the
save-df-img1/2/3/4

So just choose mode, configure everything from the config window and leave some direction and manually add save-df-img1/2/3 or 4 to some of the directions in
extensions.easydragtogo.link.actionSets

It may look complicated but it's not

Thanks for your detailed reply.
When you posted first I checked "DragIt" which seems to do the same stuff as easy_dragtogo.
But that wasn't what I actual searched for.

Probably my expression of the problem/wish was a bit misleading.
I don't want to save to preconfigured folders, but dropping the file(link) to any opened windows explorer window to save the file there.

meanwhile I asked on the support-firefox mailing list and got the following answer:
The drag action is the responsability of Firefox, the drop action the
one of windows explorer. SO the question is how the windows explorer
could be changed to handle the drop of a url as downloading the url
(with firefox)

for that reason I will now code a little program that handles/overwrites the windows explorer drop event
so that it will download the file if it gets an url.

Again thanks to all who replied!

Best regards

One question...if you succeed in making such program, will it work the way it works while using IE(first save the file in the temp folder and the copy it to the folder you want)or it will directly save the file there.

If it's the second, could you post the program after you are done.

I hope the secound one ;-)
it will directly save the file there

don't know yet how difficult it will be to create an explorer drag hook, but read a bit that it will not be as easy as assumed.

Sure I can post it, when I made it.
Don't have too much time at the moment - so it can last a while.
Will try to do this in c#.
