How to configure NIS?
"Step Five: If the settings are not like those shown here (click here to see them) left click under Internet Access and change to permit all, and left click under category and change to general"
Doesn't this mean that NIS doesn't provide any meaningful protection when browsing with Firefox? Sorry, if this 'd be a "stupid" question.

Permit all/general is the standard setting for a web browser (it should for example set IE up this way) For some reason, NIS seems to prefer to set Firefox up to access only for one session, one way traffic, no downloads, and with the localhost loopback disabled.
I don't know how to do any of this stuff, I just hire the guys that do
Have you considered reading the HELP folder. Right there on your menu bar.

How to configure NIS?
Many thanks, for the quick reply!
However, how come that when I used F-Secure (in combination with Firefox) I was asked to enable the "Internet Shield", e.g. on "home" or "office", and that when I put it on "Allow all", I was warned for the dire consequences?
Sorry, for my obtuseness!

Don't use that product I'm afraid, so I can't help you there. I would guess that just because it uses a similar word, it may not mean the same thing. I think the key for NIS is that the automatic setting only configures versions of programs that Symantec "considers safe" - which to date hasn't included Firefox, hence the locked down settings, and the need for a manual override. If the product you are asking about is warning that you should only enable this setting for trusted products, then it is the same issue.

Firefox connection was refused
Hello Hellene:
After searching for two days, I found YOU!
Thank you, thank you! The step by step Guidelines were so easy for me to follow. I knew it had to do with a security program because after I started the Firefox setup, a dialog box came up and I automactically clicked it and as it was disapearing, I noticed the "Do Not Permit". And now, Firefox is up and running!
So, thank you again. You are the bomb!

Hi,
I've been using firefox for a while now and i've never had a problem with it, but ever since i upgraded to version 1.0.4 NIS is not letting firefox connect. I checked the setting and it was set to permit all and general already but still refuses a connection. if i disable NIS then firefox works fine. i have no idea what to do and i realise this is more of a NIS problem than a firefox problem but i was wondering if anyone else had this happen to them and if there is something that can be done.
thnx

Try knocking out every reference to firefox in NIS and letting it redetect the program.
