More information on uninstalling JavaFX as a fix to enable Java 7 Update 10 detection:

See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=820759#c12

Thomas Ng (from oracle.com) wrote this 2012-12-24 14:50:48 PST

I can reproduce now! At least with this setup:

7u5 + FX 2.1.1 installed first.

Install 7u10 -> this will cause plugin registration problem. Looks like we have a bug in deploy registration code to handle this case. Plugin from 2.1.1 is still being registered as fault. I need to debug more to find out the problem.

In my case, uninstall of FX 2.1.1 will correct the problem and bring back 7u10 as default plugin.

Also, 7u5 upgrade to 7u10 works okay for me. (no FX 2.1.1 standalone install) 7u10 plugin gets registered correctly.

Would be great if Mozilla can confirm this is what they are seeing as well. Thanks!

I added this fix to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Uninstall_JavaFX

When I checked for updates of my plugins, I got the message that Java SE 7U9 was outdated.
I tried to get information by reviewing some of the other links when I searched this forum for Java.

I am now frankly more confused.
Can you give me specific directions on what I should do please.

1. Should I uninstall SS7U9?
2 Do I then go to the (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/fi ... nstall.xml) link and follow their directions?
Firefox_online_install did not show correctly
3. Or should I wait until there is some resolution about the SE7U10?

Thanks in advance!

BTW I just made an error and had an unwanted toolbar and search engine installed on my FF.
It might be helpful to have the series of steps to remove them available for others.
I would be willing to draft a set that someone more knowledgeable than I could review and edit.

There is no need to update from Java 7 Update 9 to Update 10 since there are no security vulnerabilities fixed. Java 7 Update 10 has security enhancements, in particular, the ability to set Security levels and to disable Java for all browsers from the Java Control Panel Security tab.

RPMozley,

Ah Ha! It worked.

After all the back and forth through a number of threads, your suggestion is the only thing that worked - FF now recognizes Java U10, and the plugin checker didn't show any anomalies.

Thanks so very much...

[+1] Fx Update Checker Stated SE7 U5 was Up-To-date BUT Addons Mgr had (apparently) Disabled it for Security Issue -- and I was about to Post THAT question that's Not Needed NOW simply by Uninstalling JavaFX in Control panel. FX Tools / Addons NOW Shows the Correct, Latest Ver that was there all along.

I'll admit confusion as to the BEST UPDATE method/ site as I wound up in Control Panel with Java 7 Updates 9 AND 10 showing -- and Updating from the Java site in Control Panel last time caused this, I think. Things just didn't look the same after Updating but the details are long gone from my aging brain.

Firefox's update checker has NEVER worked correctly and likely never will. My advise is to not use it and set your plugins to all automatically update. And completely remove Java if you don't actually use it since it's got more security holes than a bank made of swiss cheese.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

Thanks, I noted the same (Ditch Java) suggestion earlier. I've DISABLED IT for Now to see IF Anything raises Its Hand to Say I Need Java Now. Uninstall could be in its near future.

Thanks again.

Dufty, thanks for the registry post. It worked for me, though when doing a "select all" from the web site to copy, it copies a blank line at the front that needs to be removed in order for Registry Editor to recognize it as a valid .reg file. I also removed the leading spaces on each line to be safe. But after that I exited and reopened Firefox and all was well.
