Just turn off the computer: no risk!
We must therefore accept to live "dangerously"...

Actually, Apple has stopped shipping Java with new machines last year, and in the early part of next year Google Chrome will stop supporting the plugin architecture required to make Java work. Many respected authorities in the world of web security recommend either disabling or uninstalling Java. So Mozilla are not the only ones who consider it to be dangerous.

More seriously, when html5 language will no longer make use of Java applets, it will be a big improvement.
To do this, we're working in science (math, physics, chemistry) ; but unfortunately this is not the case : JRE is required for these uses.
So Java RE is unfortunately necessary for us, scientists. And Apple continues to ship Java ; Google Chrome still tolerate JRE !

What are you talking about?

Then use it. Nobody is going to take away your local Java-programs, only the applets in browsers are being targeted. Which you still can use.

So does Firefox, you're just being warned. Twice, no less: Once from Firefox, once from Java itself.

No it is not. There are other options as you should know being a "Scientist"

Any equation or visualization of an equation in science (maths, physics, chemistry) which can be done in Java can be done quite easily in JavaScript and using rendering tools available to all browsers for the last decade. And current browsers can do some really very advanced renderings.

Here are a set of HTML5 examples which are mostly geometry-related physics:

"Malliz", do not be so categorical and not talk about what you do not know! We agree: Java applets pose security problems
But they are still a standard - for example - to visualize molecules on the web: so is the Jmol project.
http://jmol.sourceforge.net/index.fr.html.
Look at any catalog of chemistry: it enables Java applets! For example : http://www.chemspider.com/Chemical-Structure.2157.html?rid=69327b24-3260-4467-8c9a-f3367a6ad34b.
It is a reality that it is regrettable indeed!
Now the community is working to translate these scripts via html5: it's almost ready.
And we can indeed observe that many projects are now available in html5, as noted PDamsey here.
For example : http://web.chemdoodle.com/.
Same for mathematics as Geogebra project http://www.geogebra.org/cms/en/
the web is evolving but not yet to the point of eliminating JRE. That's it!

No, the problem is that you are harassing the wrong people. We are just an unofficial user-to-user forum for people using Mozilla products. You should write each and every one of those website's developers and ask them why they continue to base their apps on insecure and soon-to-be unsupported plugins instead of universally-supported JavaScript and CSS.

AFAIK the block has nothing to do with the Firefox version. It's handled by an XML file that updates once a day (?) online.
