See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1099973#c5 for a workaround.

And one last thing today - I've checked Avast GUI and there was really an option in the Browser Cleanup tool to clean browsers automatically. I'm sure I haven't turned this option on!
Are you sure about that. The setting in Browser Cleanup tool does an automatcially check, but it doesn't remove them automatically, you will be informed.

Re: Many add ons disappeared
It actually happened to me again. I reinstalled some add-ons and classic theme, adblock plus, and tab mix plus have all disappeared again. Before I reinstalled anything I changed the setting in Avast to not automatically check browsers for add-ons with bad ratings.. Some add-ons that remained are flashblock, lastpass, xmarks, avast online security, and download helper. The first 4 I mentioned were disabled. However I had also installed the noscript add-on and that was disabled as well but has since disappeared.

Re: Many add ons disappeared
Do you have HTTPS scanning on in Avast?
Do you use Firefox Sync?

I wasn't using Sync the first two times my add-ons disappeared but I just enabled it after I had reinstalled them a third time. I don't know about Avast HTTPS scanning.. where do I see if that is running?

Avast settings -> Active protection -> Click customize next to Web Shield and there it is.

HTTPS scanning has caused lots of problem here, it did cause crashes in Firefox right when Avast 2015 was released. I've turned it off now on all my machines, hadn't had my add-ons disappear after it went off, though far from sure it's the culprit.

Ok it was enabled.. I just disabled it so I guess I'll just wait and see if any more add-ons disappear.

HTTPS scanning hasn't caused any problems with extensions on any of my 3 laptops across several Firefox profiles. The problem seems to be the Avast Browser Cleanup.

Expect that Avast Browser Cleanup doesn't remove automatically and people who doesn't have Avast Browser Cleanup installed, also had this problem.
*** Scratch that, it was Browser Cleanup. The Avast team has found the bug.

Re: Many add ons disappeared
FF crashed (it's always crashing) then it quickly reopened and crashed again and reopened..I checked the add ons and found two that I didn't add( I always get those browser hijackers) and my add-Ons gone..I don't have Avast installed..
Ff has been misbehaving for a long time always crashing and adding unwanted add-ons and I remove them from the control panel..
anyone solved the problem here..keep in mind I don't have Avast at all..

Re: Many add ons disappeared
If you are finding those "add-ons" in the Windows Control Panel they are not extensions but plug-ins, over which Firefox has no control.
