Firefox Runing in one directory on windows xp

Post by fbrzuzka »

Hello,

How to force firefox to use only one directory like opera 12.17 and older did ?

Opera keeps everything in one folder
Below example from my pc

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\internet1\My Documents\Opera

profil and cache of Opera:

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\internet1\My Documents\Opera\profile

Firefox use 3 directories

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\internet1\Application Data\Mozilla

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\internet1\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\internet1\My Documents\Firefox

How to run firefox in 1 folder only:

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\internet1\My Documents\Firefox
?

Cheers

None of what you have there is even remotely standard.

Typically Firefox installs itself under:
C:\Programs Files\Mozilla Firefox\

and then places your profile data under:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\

Trying to put them into the same directory is not recommended for a variety of reasons, including the fact that if a Firefox update fails, you might loose your personal data when attempting to reinstall. You also may need to create a second profile for testing purposes or backups.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

Yeah... that spread for Firefox looks pretty weird...

If you really want everything pointed to a single folder then you should be using the Portable version of Firefox... and this Portable site also contains many other browsers in the portable version...

I don't want install anything.

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable save profil and cache to one folder only when you use "Firefox Portable launcher" instead of original exe.
When you use orginal exe included in "http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable" Firefox still create new directories: local settings, application data.

Can you tell me how to configure already installed firefox to use 1 folder ?

I don't know what you are doing at your end to end up with that Portable Firefox residing in
those areas... when you bring down the portable version... you click on it and it asks where you want to put it... it's best to create a folder name Portable and then tell it to put it in that folder... my portable Firefox sits in a Portable folder along with other apps. that I got from that site. In my portable Firefox folder in there it makes 3 folders over and above the files it puts in there... and they are...
App
Data
Other

and those folders and their data are no where sitting in Windows areas such as local settings, application data etc... I have no idea what you are doing at your end to create that stuff.

Can you tell me how to configure already installed firefox to use 1 folder ?

No I can't... I let computers place stuff where they need it... that is what Windows is for. The portable version is as close as you are going to get.

Exactly how many times do you have to be told it cannot be done before you get it? Stop being a troll

Just switch over to the new Opera and pester them about it. I'm betting it doesn't install into a single directory either.

And please don't post full screenshots inline, not everybody is using a high-resolution monitor.

Mozilla applications distinguish between "Local" and "Roaming" (so named on Windows 7, the general Application Data folder in Windows XP) parts of the profile. This is per design of the underlying operating system. For example, cache data and files needed for an update are held in the local part (i.e., specific to your machine) whereas the roaming part of the profile holds your settings and configuration (which you may share across multiple machines, e.g., on a network drive). So, that makes perfectly sense.

For further reading if you indeed want to mess up your installation:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory

What would likely happen if you squeeze those two into the same directory is that an update screws up the profile if it's in the installation folder. There has also been some fix in the recent past to exactly prevent merging or nesting folders into each other, so it's definitely not on the "recommended" list.

And to top it off... Ed pointed out that the OP has gone thru all of this over at SUMO .... and basically just wasted all of our time...

I STRONGLY suggest that in the future ... that you post links to other areas of discussion so that we don't spend time duplicating what others have already pointed out to you.

EDIT
On further thought... I suggest that this topic be locked ](*,) ](*,)
