FF 39.0 can't navigate from address bar

Sorry, I really messed up the last post.

I can navigate by clicking a link or a bookmark, but I can't by typing into or selecting from the dropdown menu. This also happens in safe mode.

If no improvement using Safe Mode, do you have the same problem if you create a new profile and test it with no extensions or non-default themes installed?

I have been using FF for years, but this is the first time I got this problem.
"Safe Mode" and "Refreshing FireFox" didn't work, only creating a new profile did.

WARNING: backing up Bookmarks possibly also doesn't work. No URLS seem to be stored in the backup files, only the bookmark folder structure!!!!

Update: I did found some working bookmark backups in:
C:\Users\YOUR-USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\PROFILE_NAME\bookmarkbackups
My bookmark backups where about 521kb each, but the bookmark today (after the update) was 32kb.

Okay, here is what I've done:

1) I tried reinstalling 39.0 over itself and it didn't help.
2) Since I use SVN to back up my profile, I reverted to a version from just before the upgrade and installed FF 38.0.5 over 39.0 and the url bar worked again.
3) I then installed 39.0 over it and the url bar thing happened again.
4) I repeated step 2 again except that I stayed at 38.0.5 instead of trying 39.0 again and the url bar started working again.

I will take it at XDev2's word that creating a new profile will work; I'll just stay at 38.0.5 for now until 39.0.1 comes out to fix the problems in 39.0 - one of which I hope will be the bug I am experiencing.

Except no one else has reported seeing this issue. I'm using version 39.0 under Win Vista and don't have the problem.

Well, there's at least one more person who is seeing this.

But your subtle snarkiness was probably due to the fact that I didn't really express myself the way I intended. I didn't mean to sound like I "knew" that it just had to be definitely a bug and I would wait for the next release fix it, making me definitely sound like a smart-a$$ know-it-all, and worthy of such a response (actually maybe even a harsher response). I meant I was hoping it was a bug and that it would wait to see if it was and was then fixed, and not some subtly scrambled profile due to old age and countless updates.

That's an interesting read, but I don't think this is what is happening due to what I tried above, plus - and this is new info that you made me think about - it happens even with a blank homepage to start it off.

It may be due to an old profile that has been through countless FF updates, and has some weird issues, just as if you had weird glitches with Windows 7 because you've been updating the same installation, and not ever started fresh, since Windows 95.

Just what "backups" are you talking about; places.sqlite or bookmarks*.jsonlz4 or bookmarks.html ?

Such issues can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite file.

I encountered the same issue, and removing places.sqlite from profiles directory solved it; even though I lost the history...

I have the same problem. Safe mode won't fix it, and indeed, deleting the places.sqlite will "work" as a work-around.
However, I'm unable to recover a working version of it using the plugin "Places Maintenance" (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/)

The database was working in all versions before, only since v39.0 it stopped working. I tried an older backup as well, which also fails in 39.0.

What happened, what changed, that the old files might be viewed as "corrupted" by v39?
What steps could be taken to repair the DB?
