Hi

Just wondering whether firefox uses pulseaudio or alsa, and how to tell it to use a specific device/demixer?

TIA

Sound system is controlled by the system, Firefox does not control the sound system used.
Both Pulse and Alsa work with Firefox.
Some of this depends on the players and mixers you have installed on your system.

Yes, I realise that firefox doesn't control the sound system, but somewhere in it it will be coded to use alsa or pulse or either. What I want to know is which it is using currently, and how I can change to one or the other so I can see what works best, and specifically how get it to use alsa dmixer plugin.

Firefox uses the cubeb library for audio output. This library supports pulse, alsa, jack and I think oss too, so everything is covered. No idea how it decides which it will use, it's probably pulse when the pulse daemon is running, alsa otherwise. In the alsa case dmix is used by default, no configuration necessary for that.

Thanks for that info. I'll look into cubeb.
