[RESOLVED] Firefox 52 & Silverlight5.1

Post by sankeny »

Prior to Firefox 52, I was able to configure Silverlight & Pipelight as NPAPI plugins in Firefox. I use Linux Mint 18.1 I have one website that requires Silverlight, and it's important to my business needs. Now, I am dependent on Windows 7 & IE11 in VirtualBox to complete my work. The website in question: http://www.freestockcharts.com/

The best suggestion I've found is to install the Windows 32 version of Firefox ESR in Wine 2.2 as it emulates Windows 7 Suggestion: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2028

I can install Firefox ESR in my current Wine version (1.6.2) which emulates Windows XP, and it's very stable. I can also install Silverlight5.1 & Adobe Flash in this Wine version, but the current Java requires Windows 7, so an upgrade is necessary (I'll do that soon) I cannot get Silverlight to load in ESR even with "plugin.load_flash_only" "false" in "about:config"

Silverlight does not load in Firefox ESR in my VirtualBox Windows 7 installation either. Any suggestions?

Maybe use a different site which offers the same service but doesn't require Silverlight.

Well, you know, it's been a long time since I searched for a competent chart service, and I thought I knew them all (the "freebies," anyway)

Thanks for encouraging me to look, as the first one I landed on (https://tradingview.com/chart/) is very similar to the one I use, and it's customizable. I use the freebie specifically for one indicator my broker doesn't provide, and I work from one chart to another before placing trades. I need customizable, and TradingView appears to give it! I think I'm gonna be satisfied.

I realize this suggestion doesn't resolve the issue with Firefox 53 ESR & Silverlight, but as I stated earlier, I know Silverlight is going away at some point.

Thanks for the obvious! Your login is intuitive, "Reflective," though I'm not sure you planned it that way. It certainly was in this instance. Thx

By the way, if anyone else is looking for a solution to the Silverlight dilemma, try Midori browser. I can't get it to work in Linux (grabs Firefox plugins & settings), but installing the Windows Midori in Wine should do the trick, and you can install the Windows versions of Silverlight, Flash & Java as well. Have a lot of fun!

Midori uses WebKit and so complete different to firefox
http://midori-browser.org/faqs/#flash_doesn_t_work

Firefox itself discontinued all plugins except flash - until v57 arrives, then NO plugin is usable.

Hey All,

I am also having a problem with Silverlight in Firefox and FreeStockCharts.com. All of a sudden, when I try to run FreeStockCharts (clicking the "Free Version" button), I get an error saying Silverlight is required. Initially I thought, oh....k, I'll update SL. But I download latest version and try to install, I get a msg from SL saying the installed version is up to date. I try to restart FSC but getting the same error (SL plugin req'd).

I'm running Win10 and Firefox 52.0.

Are you saying there's no fix for this? ever?? "Firefox itself discontinued all plugins except flash - until v57 arrives, then NO plugin is usable." Other that use another browser (which I really do not want to do if I can help it).

Thanks for any suggestions.

The Firefox 52.0 and later Releases on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux only allows the Flash Player Plugin to run.

You should be able to use the Firefox 52.0 ESR to use Silverlight and other Plugins as if you were using Firefox 51.0 and older whether on Windows, Mac OSX or Linux. The Win64 Firefox still only allows the 64-bit Flash Player and Silverlight Plugins.https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/

I did the work-around suggested above and it works for now.

What I'd like to know is why are they doing this? I need Java to log in to USPTO.gov. Are the programmers going to get the federal gov't. to change to something else? What will be the long term solution?

Oracle is discontinuing Java plugin as well https://blogs.oracle.com/java-platform- ... lugin_free so let's hope that Web programmers will switch to other technology, supported by modern browsers, before Mozilla removal this unofficial plugin support definitely.

For what it's worth, I was able to get both Flash & Silverlight working in Firefox ESR on Windows (not Linux) I installed ESR into a separate directory (obvious) and created a "clean" profile specific to ESR Once I created the profile, I was able to install the Silverlight plugin. It asks to "Activate," but that can be changed in "Add-ons" to "Always Activate"

In regard to Midori, I am able to run both Flash & Silverlight in the Windows version (not Linux)

I see the comment regarding Midori & Webkit, and in my simple way of understanding, it looks like Midori picks up whatever is installed systemwide. Silverlight is installed systemwide in Windows, thus, it works. Before Firefox updated to 52.0, Silverlight worked in Linux Midori, as it picked up my Pipelight/Silverlight configuration. It doesn't work now, as that config is removed.

My next project is to install Windows Firefox ESR via Wine (v.2.3-staging since it "emulates" Windows 7), then install Silverlight as a plugin

Lastly, for what it's worth, I have never been able to get the "about:config" suggestion to work.
