Fxv 52.1 has both search and navigation bars

Post by ndebord »

I have been using only ESR versions for some time. Just upgraded from 45.9.0 to 52.1, however now I have both search and navigation toolbars, not good on my 8 inch Dell Venue Pro8 tablet. Real estate is all important there. Can't seem to merge the two into one. Omnibar is ancient and doesn't work and Foobar also fails. Back to 45.9 for now.

Any ideas?

Tks

Not exactly what you asked for, but it works for me. I don't have a search bar, having dumped it into the Customize box long ago. I search from bookmarks in a folder, giving me the opportunity to use a variety of search engines.

LoveMyFoxy,

That could work, not exactly my cup of tea though. My method is to combine the two, then click on the search icon to bring up whichever search engine I wish to use. I have a long list as I used Add to Search and from there do whatever.

I'll keep looking, perhaps there is another way not yet found.

Tks.

however you can drag&drop the search bar away to the storage. then the desired search engine is used if you enter search terms into the addressbar. some of my bookmarks are also created to search with a keyword. if you use more than one bar then drag&drop the search bar into that bar and reduce its width.

omnibar seems outdated, try ominibar lite
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/a ... ibar-lite/

at least there exist no extension yet fore firefox like "searchbar" for chrome which popup as a bar with my selection of searchengines
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... dnidbammed
(although its an webextension firefox still dont have the api to use it)

Brummelchen,

Yes, I had tried that method... adds an extra step when using different search engines. Perhaps I shall try it again. Not a big fan of bookmarks with keywords, as I seldom remember the words! <sigh>

OmnibarLite does not restore the previous integrated search/navigation toolbar... too bad.

As for Chrome, well, I have it, or rather I have Vivaldi and SlimJet... both work nicely with open in chrome from Firefox and from time to time, seem to work where Firefox fails.

Thanks.

not sure whats your problem - the picture from omnibar (lite) explains it well - type <g term> to use google search or <dd term> to use duckduckgo with the addressbar (navigation). firefox did not change any concerning the search bar or addressbar - at least the search bar was new designed but that is only cosmetics.

to regain the old searchbar behavior and more you can install CTR or OTL
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/a ... r/versions
https://github.com/Baton34/organize-sea ... aster/xpis

but that requires the search bar. all was said, im done.

Brummelchen,

Thanks, I already use classic theme restorer, but as you said, nothing (yet) restores single navigation and search toolbar. I'm done here... will wait for SeaMonkey ESR and meanwhile stick with 45.xx

Much thanks.

You can move the search bar to the "3-bar" menu button drop-down list via Customization mode or via the right-click context menu of the magnifier icon (Move to Menu).
Then you still have easy access to the search bar because even the keyboard shortcut will open the drop-down list with focus on the search bar.
I do this in most of the profiles to have a location bar that shows as much as possible.

dickvl,

Thanks, that is another way to go that I had not thought of. Shall try it out asap.
